Mechanical Engineer - Crane Design
The role was in the consultant and design fields but operating exclusively for Bluescope steel and the various departments at the Port Kembla Steelworks. This was a great role because it allowed me to develop my complex problem solving skills as I frequently needed to develop multiple solutions and use a process of elimination to decide on the most suitable and cost effective option. Here I used Autocad, Autodesk Inventor, Steelbeam and Spacegass to create detailed drawings and models for design and analysis (as well as fabrication) to produce solutions for problems and projects within the steelworks environment. These designs also required detailed engineering calculations relevant to Australian Standards as well as Bluescope Steel design codes to ensure compliance.Another part of the role was to complete the auditing and subsequent 25 year life cycle reports for maturing electric overhead cranes within the business, to allow them to continue operating past their original design life.It was a great business to work for as it was highly safety focused but also very professional and heavily engineering based.
