Three years after naively choosing a farming career and steeping myself in conventional wisdom, I discovered only 2" of topsoil left on the flattest ground on Grandpa's farm in Edinburg Missouri. The adjacent Oddfellows Cemetary had 15. That's 83% gone. Shocked, I questioned everything. And the opt out process began.The answers came from Kiwi farmers, masters of pasture management, builders of soil. I visited in 1985, 89, and 93. I founded the Green Hills Farm Project in 1988, brought in sheep in 1989, and chickens and pigs in 1993. Accepted in the historic first round of SARE Grants was my proposal to fund a mobile processing unit and share construction and poultry dis-assembly with five other farm families.Boosted by strong chicken sales my returns at the Kansas City Farmer's Market doubled every year for four years. Sales were strong enough to leave Grandpa's farm and purchase 64 acres from an Amishman in nearby Jamesport. The building of an off-grid, strawbale farm house and setting up and running the Wonderland farm within this Amish community is chronicled in Just the Greatest Life.Industrious Amish neighbors helped me fill the need for poultry processing equipment and Featherman Equipment was born. From a simple plastic plucker for backyard processing we have evolved to a fully equipped processing plant within a shipping container, the Plant in a Box.
