I perform a wide range of supporting activities for the Director and the entire NCCIH organization.
On behalf of the NIH, provide leadership, analysis and support for development of science policy on a wide array of issues related to biomedical research.
I serve as the Acting Deputy Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Institutes of Health (NIH). In this capacity, I am responsible for providing leadership in the development, implementation, and management of NIDA’s research portfolio and strategic priorities and assists the Director of NIDA to support and conduct research to improve prevention and treatment of drug use, abuse and addiction. Prior to this current appointment, I served as the Director of the Division of Basic Neuroscience and Behavioral Research (DBNBR). In this role, I oversaw the scientific direction of the Division to primarily support basic biomedical and behavioral science research that relates to the public health problem of drug abuse and addiction.
As Director of DBNBR my resposibilities included the following:• Provide oversight and leadership in identifying and developing new areas of science applicable to drug addiction and set program priorities and operational and implementation plans to develop new scientific areas• Supervise, manage and work with a staff of twenty nine including twenty four Health Scientist Administrators to promote basic science research through operational plans to develop program priorities and identify important areas of science to enhance our understanding of the neurobiological and behavioral basis of drug abuse and addiction• Develop, write and disseminate targeted grant funding announcements• Organize national symposia and workshops to promote and develop scientific agenda• Manage and resolve complex personnel issues within the Division• Participate in professional conferences as a session chair or invited participant to disseminate information about emerging areas of research and promoted NIDA funding opportunities• Work with senior staff to develop and prioritize research applications for funding• Work with other NIH and Federal Agencies on collaborative funding initiatives including NIH Roadmap and NIH Blueprint for Neuroscience Research
