Retired professor / researcher in the field of Alzheimer's disease. Interests in the fields of artificial intelligence, neurochemistry and molecular neurobiology, biology of memory and cognition.I have worked in many areas of the biological sciences including amyloid and cholinesterase biochemistry, enzymology, atomic force microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, molecular (protein structure) modelling, neural network modelling of cognition and disease, neurotransmitter pharmacology, myelin protein biochemistry and molecular biology.Non-specialist interests in music (piano), languages and linguistics, philosophy of mind and metaphysics, and chess (former USCF Chess Master).Sports/physical activities: bushwalking, gymnasiumShort Bio: Born in Hobart, Tasmania Australia. I grew up in Canada, receiving my first degree from the University of Saskatchewan. I returned to Australia to do my PhD at the University of Melbourne under the supervision of Patrick Carnegie, working on myelin and multiple sclerosis. I was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (USA) and traveled to Boston to work at MIT under Dick Wurtman. I returned to Australia in 1984, first to Adelaide and then to Melbourne in 1986 where I worked first at Melbourne University (Biochemistry, Pathology) and then later at Monash University (Biochemistry). Finally in 2008 I moved back to Tasmania to take up the position of Professorial Fellow (NHMRC Senior Research Fellow) at the Menzies Institute in Hobart. Full circle.
