An expert Coastal Engineer with over 35 years’ experience in his field, who has an in-depth understanding of the natural coastal processes that shape and affect small island states in tropical environments. He has been at the forefront of the integration of climate change adaptation in coastal design using both traditional "hard" (i.e., concrete or armour stone), as well as “softer” nature-based (such as beach nourishment, mangrove replanting, etc.), coastline protection solutions. He has long standing experience with complex international marine projects globally, having worked on projects in the Caribbean, Canada, West Africa, and the Canadian Arctic. These included shoreline rehabilitation and/or restoration projects, ports and marina designs, expert witness testimony cases in the Caribbean and North America, and national-scale Coastal Zone Management Planning, for several Caribbean Island states. He is a co-founder of the firm, Smith Warner International, known throughout the Caribbean as one of the leading companies in the area of coastal engineering design, build and conservation.He is also a Senior Lecturer [part-time] in the Faculty of Engineering, University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica in Fluid Mechanics, Open Channel Flow and Coastal Engineering/Coastal Zone Management. In this regard, he has facilitated a Private-Sector/Academia synergy that promotes annual Internship programs which encompass research benefitting academia, industry, the natural environment and the broader society. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in Jamaica and in Ontario, Canada.
