After two years of schooling and apprenticeship I became a certified Band Instrument Repair Technician. This has been my part time or full time secular occupation for 45 years. This training included the use of machine tools (such as lathe, drill press, grinding machines, tool grinding) as well as metal working, soldering, brazing, use of hand tools, and power tools. I have trained numerous other individuals in various aspects of this trade skill. Also included with my job were the following:Repairing machines or instruments using the needed tools.Troubleshooting - Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.Giving full attention to what clients are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate.Talking to others to convey information effectively.Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents. Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making.Selecting and using training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new things.Controlling operations of equipment. Able to communicate effectively in speech and writing.
