Following two years of laboratory work in the Environmental Toxicology field my interests led me to start a contracting business to design and install solar thermal systems for water heating and building space heating. Called Natural Heating Systems, my partner and I sold that business in 1980, after which I worked for the Califorina Energy Commission Solar Office. In 1981 I formed the Davis Energy Group Inc. with partners Marshall Hunt and Richard Bourne. In addition to business management my role was designing energy-efficient heating and cooling systems for single and multifamily buildings, and commercial and public buildings (specializing in hydronic systems), managing research projects to evaluate energy efficient buildings and systems, developing and testing, new HVAC products, and working with the Energy Commission to update codes and standards. During my term as Vice President and President of Davis Energy Group I managed and co-managed such projects as PG&E's Advanced Customer Technology Test (ACT2) and the Ground Source Heat Pump Project, and the Department of Energy-funded Building America program team, Alliance for Residential Building Innovation.In 2015 Davis Energy Group was sold to GTI and in 2017 became one of the core businesses of Frontier Energy. There I was employed full time as a vice president until semi-retiring at the end of 2022. Most of my work with Frontier has involved energy codes and standards development and business development.
