Provides assistance on short and long range work planning for the Forest Fleet Program, by gathering data and recommending changes to improve fleet management activities, services, efficiency, and expenditures. Reviews vehicle and equipment maintenance schedules to determine that necessary repairs are being performed to keep them safe and serviceable; reviews records of repairs and utilization to assure that repairs and usage are within established criteria. Inspects new vehicles received from the manufacturer and advises as to acceptance condition; assures warranty repairs are accomplished prior to assignment whenever possible; assists in specification determination of new vehicles; request rotation of under or over utilized vehicles; and initiates documentation for disposal action for unused or obsolete equipment. Provides input for programming and budgeting reports required for annual vehicle budget submission. Develops data and participates in decisions related to minimum acceptable bids on sale vehicles, where applicable. Submits and verifies new vehicle requisitions with the Regional Office.Supports all functions associated with property accountability for fleet and equipment. Functions to be performed but not limited to work orders – scheduling, initiating, distributing, and closing; maintenance and utilization (mileage/hours) input for equipment; monitoring usage; establishing service dates for equipment/vehicles; assigning local ID number for equipment/vehicles; assist in the receipt and termination of vehicles.Assists with purchasing or contracting by acting as the central procurement officer for the activities and services rendered for equipment, fuel contracts, leases, wash/wax services, specialized vehicle components, and bodies, etc. Tracks information through automated purchasing program. Assists in the planning, direction, and administration of the driver/operator training, testing, and qualifications program for the Forest.

Operated automotive, material-handling, weight lifting and construction equipment involved in earth moving, road building, quarrying, asphalt batching and paving, concrete paving, and construction work. Read and worked from workshop drawings, sketches, and specifications; read grade stake markings; computed working loads for lines and wire rope; used slings, spreaders, cargo nets, and hooks; determined optimum working distances for construction equipment; changed attachments and adapted cable/hydraulic assemblies on tractors (wheeled and crawler) with front- and rear-mounted and towed attachments. Operated and performed maintenance on portable rotary rock drill, compaction equipment, tractors, front-end loaders, forklifts, passenger-carrying vehicles, and tractor-trailers.Worked from construction drawings and specifications; drew simple shop drawings and sketches; maintained records, logs, and time sheets; prepared requisitions; changed attachments and adapted cable/hydraulic assemblies on multipurpose excavators and cranes (crawler), up to and including three-cubic-yard for clamshell, dragline, shovel-front, backhoe, pile driver, and hooklock; operated and performed operator maintenance on scrapers, cranes, pile drivers, rock drills, asphalt pavers, soil stabilization mixers, and rough-terrain forklifts up to and including those with 18,000-pound capacity; maintains asphalt surfaces. Prepared as-built drawings, work progress reports, and material usage data; implements on-the-job training; directed crews in excavating, paving, grading, hauling, and materials-handling operations; made work assignments; used contemporary software programs in construction estimating and scheduling; construction inspector; computed volume of embankment sections; estimated manpower, material, and equipment needs from drawings and specifications; carried out procedures to limit or minimize the adverse effects of oil and fuel spills and of fuel combustion on air quality.
