Davey Stevens is the journalism teacher and adviser at Fremont High School in Fremont, Nebraska. Davey graduated from Wayne State College with a degree in Secondary English Education and a minor in Editing and Publishing. He also has a masters degree in Literacy through Concordia University. Before he accepted his role at FHS, Davey taught at Scribner-Snyder Community Schools for 7 years and at Tekamah-Herman for 1 year. He attributes his love for teaching journalism to his time at SSCS. Davey accidentally got elected to be a small school representative for the Nebraska High School Press Association in 2016. Six years later he is currently serving as a large school representative and secretary. Davey has worn many hats in his career as a small school English teacher by sponsoring speech, one act, student council, community service club, plant club, video game club, and academic decathlon. As journalism teacher in a Class A school, Davey was at first content with having fewer extracurricular responsibilities; however, like he does with crab rangoons at a buffet, he is adding to his plate by co-sponsoring student council and multicultural club in addition to advising photography club. Davey started his pursuit of his MJE through Kent State University in 2021. During the summer of 2022, Davey attended four mental health and LGBTQ+ support workshops, a mental health conference. He also became certified for JEA Critique Training and for JEA Mentor training. In addition to teaching, Davey is a full-time nerd. He babysat himself by watching the original Star Wars trilogy on repeat and playing with Star Wars action figures as a child. Davey is a self-proclaimed expert on the Marvel Cinematic Universe and an avid comic book reader. By embracing his inner nerd and love for education, Davey prioritizes making connections with his students and providing a safe space for them to learn and express themselves. His current principal once described his observation of Davey’s teaching as “magical”, which is the best compliment he has ever received as a teacher. His yearbook staff thinks it is important for others to know that he is a Scorpio, a Slytherin, and is (according to a personality quiz) Grumpy Bear. If he isn’t teaching, Davey is either caring for his indoor jungle of houseplants, hanging out with his cats (Miyu and Watts), collecting crystals, or escaping reality by playing video games – and thinking about teaching.
