Deputy International EditorReuters News Agency May 2014 - Oct 2015Washington D.C.Overseeing enterprise as well as breaking international and national security news emanating from Washington, and coordinating with Reuters bureaus round the world. . -
Editor, Washington Breaking News TeamReuters News Agency Jan 2014 - Apr 2014Washington D.C.Heading a small team of really good editors/journalists initiated to drive the breaking news at the heart of Washington general news reporting. -
Editor, Americas DeskReuters News Agency Sep 2003 - Dec 2013Washington D.C.Tables turned -- after whining about editors for two decades, now it's time to be one. Not so easy. Discovered that almost any story can be written in an infinite number of ways, but you can't go wrong with simple, active and compact. -
Editor-In-Charge, National Security And Foreign AffairsReuters News Agency Sep 1993 - Sep 2003Washington D.C.On the first day of this assignment President Bill Clinton arranged the handshake on the White House lawn between Yasser Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin and it went on from there, through elections, wars, economic rise and fall and eventually 9/11. -
Political CorrespondentReuters News Agency 1990 - 1993London, United KingdomCovered the melodramatic fall from power of Margaret Thatcher in the fall of Nov 1990, working in the Reuters office in parliament underneath the tower of Big Ben - no watch required. Accompanied the succeeding PM John Major to summits and meetings round the world, from Beijing to Bombay, Rio to Washington.Discovered there's a lot to learn from tabloid reporters who can say the whole thing in six paragraphs. -
Chief Correspondent, South East AsiaReuters News Agency 1987 - 1990BangkokMost Memorable Scoop -- that Vietnam was pulling all its troops from neighboring Cambodia sent in to drive out the Khmer Rouge -- was gleaned from the British ambassador on a casual visit to Hanoi. It infuriated the resident AFP correspondent who took a day to match it. Covered Burmese revolt in 1988 and emergence of Aung San Suu Kyi. Interviewed the entrancing and steely Suu Kyi in Rangoon the day before she began years of house arrest, and (after filing) was taken under armed escort to the airport and quite politely expelled. -
Chief Correspondent, Eastern EuropeReuters News Agency 1984 - 1987ViennaSmall cracks were appearing in the Warsaw Pact façade – thousands of East Germans took over the West German embassy in Prague, Hungary tried out economic reforms. Reported from every country in the region, including an eye-opener to the supremely creepy Stalinist Albania, where they still maintained spikes on the vineyard posts to catch invading parachutists. Privileged to know dissident writer and future president Vaclav Havel, meeting, when he wasn't in prison, in his top floor flat overlooking the Vltava River as he patiently explained why you must always maintain faith in human nature. Detained at Bucharest airport in May, 1987 and ejected on first flight the next day when trying to cover a fateful visit by Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. -
Foreign CorrespondentReuters News Agency 1981 - 1983Warsaw, PolandArrived to the martial law crackdown enforced to stop the Solidarity trade union, which less than a decade later Lech Walesa led to political power as European communism collapsed. Organized and wrote coverage of the electrifying visit by Pope John Paul in June 1991.Discovered the awesome power of truth (although priests lie sometimes too). Only arrested once. -
Foreign CorrespondentReuters News Agency 1980 - 1981Ankara, TurkeyArrived for the 1980 military takeover that halted a gradual descent into political violence, discovered the importance of having the right length of moustache in the appropriate quarter of town (clipped short not safe in leftwing section, droopy could be fatal in rightwing section) and a brief assignment in Baghdad for Iran-Iraq war. Discovered that Father Christmas lived in Kas on the Mediterranean Sea, the buses from Ankara to Istanbul were not nicknamed the "flying coffins" for nothing and that the horse-and-traps parked outside the Demir Hotel in Kurdish-dominated Diyarbakir at night only go to one place -- the heavily-gated city brothel. -
Foreign CorrespondentReuters News Agency 1978 - 1979Harare, ZimbabweCovered a year of the Rhodesia guerrilla war and the eventual election of Robert Mugabe as prime minister and end of Ian Smith's white rule. These were surreal times: The gentle knock of wood on wood from the grass bowling greens of Salisbury one day, the blam blam blam of M3 rifle bullets the next. The Mazoe orange groves scented the air from miles away on the road south from Harare. The hapless British candidate for election against Mugabe, Bishop Abel Muzorewa, grew cross at stiff questioning during a news conference and warned: "You Journalists! You are skating on thin steam!" -
Foreign Correspondent, East AfricaReuters News Agency 1977 - 1978Nairobi, KenyaEvelyn Waugh would have easily recognized this corner of Africa from Scoop. Active time including the death of Jomo Kenyatta in 1978; I spent months in Somalia covering the Ogaden war with Ethiopia, the withdrawal of Soviets and Cubans and advent of Americans, plus the fall of Idi Amin in Uganda. On the plus side, safaris with giraffes and lions and buffalo and wildebeest, snow-topped Mount Kenya on the Equator and the rattling, polished wood and silver cutlery of the Nairobi to Mombasa Express. -
Foreign CorrespondentReuters News Agency 1976 - 1977Bonn, GermanyIn this sleepy temporary capital of Germany a flock of sheep was herded in open ground next to the British embassy and we had, for the first time, computer terminals to write on – a clear upgrade after Vienna’s museum pieces -- battered typewriters (one was missing the all important R key) and wooden-cased telex machines. -
Foreign CorrespondentReuters News Agency 1973 - 1975Vienna, AustriaBaptism of fire in first posting to Vienna, arriving on a weekend in September 1973 when Palestinian terrorists hijacked a train carrying Soviet Jewish emigrees as it crossed from Czechoslovakia into Austria. W.H. Auden died the same weekend. Reported on his funeral in the churchyard of the tiny Alpine village of Kirchstetten marked by a single tolling bell after his shattered longtime American lover Chester Kallmann had sobbed violently in the kitchen of their cottage. Worked in Vienna under the expert tutelage of the late Sidney Weiland, a small, tightly-packed man of fizzing energy (sometimes called Sizzling Sid), vulcanic temper, great kindness and savage loyalty to Reuters and its standards of objectivity and clear writing. -
Trainee JournalistReuters News Agency 1972 - 1973London, United KingdomBegan with Reuters as a trainee in London on Sept 18, 1972 embodying the alarming cultural influences of the time – a first-day photo reveals a young man in John Lennon glasses, shoulder-length hair, droopy moustache and a purple suit. Was one of the first non-Oxbridge trainees and part of the first annual trainee intake to include a woman – an elegant daughter of the Rubinstein cosmetics dynasty. (She didn’t stay long and has become a distinguished writer of biographies).
