Being in the preload means being in early (4am-9am is the time given when I first saw the job listing) and loading package cars for the drivers who serve the Butte, MT and surrounding area. There are 4 main positions that are part of the preload: unloader, loader, SPA, and exceptions capture. I've had the chance to work at each position in my time with UPS.The unloader is inside the trailers brought in from the Helena and Billings hubs and is responsible with quickly, safely and efficiently unloading all packages out of the trailer and sending them down the line to the SPA person with package labels facing forward, out or up so that the person SPAing can get packages down the to loaders effectively.SPA stands for Scan Print Application, and as the the acronym says, the main part of the job is scanning every package and then printing out a sticker that tells loader which package car a package goes to and where in the car it needs to be shelved.Loaders load packages into their assigned package cars (usually 3 or 4 cars to a loader) and where the SPA sticker indicates where they should be shelved. Loaders must be able to not only handle the packages for their cars but also know how to effectively load their package cars so that the driver of their cars can deliver packages accurately and without delay during their delivery routes.The individual working exceptions capture has the most technical part of the job. Any package that has an incorrect address, PO box, incorrect information, has special requirements for delivery, is a high value package, or is being held for pick-up, must be processed as an exception and then processed to be delivered correctly.Between these four positions, a steady and constant flow is needed to be maintained so that the entire preload works smoothly and effectively to make sure that package cars are ready for their delivery days.

Floorstaff for the Reel Theatre is the general employee. We are tasked with greeting the customers first thing when they walk in with a nice, welcoming atmosphere and to make sure that their experience is enjoyable from the moment they set foot in the lobby, to the time they walk out the exit doors. This is achieved by maintaining very clean facilities, including not only the lobby, but also the restrooms, hallways and auditoriums the films are played in. The interaction with customers is as equally important, so that they will hopefully come back again in the future. Floorstaff behind the counter are either working on a "Box till" or a "Concessions till." The Box employee sells tickets to the customer for their movie and directs them to which auditorium their film will be playing in. Concessions employees are in charge of selling popcorn, candy, and drinks to our customers. When the floorstaff is not currently helping customers behind the counter or working specifically on cleaning customer areas, they are working on cleaning and maintaining the rest of the theatre.

As a student employee, I was only allowed to work part time, which worked much better with my class schedule with the added benefit of being within walking distance of my classes. For the Technical Services Department, I was put in charge of receiving, labeling, sorting, and shelving of all magazines and journals, federal documents, state documents, super-fund documents, international documents, DVDs, books, patents and maps. This required learning Montana Tech Library's multiple filing systems, and be able to use them quickly and correctly.

As the assistant manager, I gained lots of valuable knowledge about how to manage not only my own time on the clock, but also other's as well. My roll on the management staff included but was not limited to scheduling employee shifts, movie scheduling, projection maintenance, auditorium maintenance, POS maintenance, weekly inventory, and weekly reports just to name the big ones. All of this was on top of also working behind the counter either as a box office employee selling tickets, or a concessions employee selling popcorn, candy, and drinks. Being a part of management, I also needed to be available to my employees whenever they needed help with resolving any conflicts or issues with an upset or angry customer.

I worked the early morning shift and was part of the team that unloaded all the freight out of the back of the delivery semi. Once all freight was off the semi and in the receiving room, we would start to unload the freight from its shipping containers and send it out to the main floor to be organized and stocked.

As the groundskeeper for Bethany,I did basic landscaping and was in charge of maintaining all lawns, trees, shrubbery, and flowers. I worked my own schedule and was contracted to work 10 hours a week.
