Profile bio

About David Wakefield

I am a Solicitor (+2YPQE) in Anthony Harper’s Corporate & Commercial team who specialises in corporate law, advising clients on mergers and acquisitions (M&A), capital markets, private equity, joint ventures, corporate restructuring and corporate governance issues.I also have experience across a wide range of commercial matters such as distribution and franchising arrangements, ComCom authorisations and clearance applications, intellectual property matters and civil disputes such as large insurance claims.I am a University of Canterbury graduate, completing a LLB and a BCom, majoring in Accounting, Tax and Finance (2013-2021). While studying, I was also busy with my semi-professional cricketing career - where I was involved in various high performance teams/squads for both Canterbury Cricket and USA Cricket. After a significant health incident in 2021, I focused my attention on becoming a corporate lawyer and joined Lane Neave's Corporate team in January 2022. During my time at LN, I completed my professional legal studies and was officially admitted to the High Court of New Zealand in September 2022.In September 2023 I joined Anthony Harper and continue to contribute to their high performing Corporate & Commercial team - reporting directly to Sam Wilson and Chris Dann.In addition to my legal career, I have been heavily involved with my cricket club (OBC) for some time now, both as a player and administrator. During my semi-professional cricketing career, I developed many skills / character traits that transfer well from high-performance sport into the workplace such as leadership, strong communication, managing pressure, perseverance, teamwork and having a growth mindset. At times I put my studies on hold to pursue further development through cricketing opportunities abroad - playing A Grade Cricket for Tea Tree Gully District CC in Adelaide (2015/2016) and being the Overseas Professional for New Milton CC in Hampshire, spending NZ winters (2016 and 2017) in the UK playing in the Southern Premier League. Further, through my USA passport I was invited to some trials and eventually made my debut for the USA National Cricket team in 2018, making my professional cricketing debut in Barbados - within a year of USA gaining ODI status. I was involved in Canterbury Cricket Men's High Performance Programme as a regular part of the Canterbury A Squad from 2017/18 - 2020/21.During my studies I was able to gain practical experience as a Law Clerk in Duncan Cotterill's Corporate / Commercial team in the summers of 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2020/21.

BetterMan is a Charitable Trust that aims to improve men's wellbeing and mental health, primarily focusing on those aged between 25-50 by helping these individuals become better versions of themselves. BetterMan’s philosophy is to take a “fence at the top of the cliff” approach as opposed to the “ambulance at the bottom”, with regular events and engaging talks planned, packed with positive psychology principles to help men move towards, or stay at, the higher end of the mental health spectrum. I have been a trustee of the BetterMan Charitable Trust since its registration in September 2023.I am very passionate about the BetterMan mission and enjoy being an advocate for wellness/wellbeing in our communities.I am particularly passionate about the BetterMan Athlete Transition Course, which aims to support athletes with their transition from their professional sporting careers into their second careers and “into the real world”. This transition can be a very difficult part of their lives for many different reasons which creates a real need for this support - I experienced this “transition” personally as a semi-professional athlete whose career was cut short due to a heart condition.
