I was pleased to join Business Direct Aviation (now BDA) as Operations Director following the appointment of a new CEO at parent company Business Direct Group.This position was based at Maastricht Airport and involved building dedicated European Airbridge Operations from Airports at Maastricht, Frankfurt and Lille into the UK, with daily scheduled flights:FRA-CVTMST-CVTLIL-CVTCVT-DUBThe role involved extensive travel and negotiation throughout Europe, plus a demanding time critical operational schedule, every day. Particular highlights included the volcano flight crisis in 2010 and relocating UK hub operations from Coventry Airport to Birmingham Airport with 2 days notice, also in 2010.This grew to a £25m business, which gained Regulated Agent status in each country (surprisingly different process by country) and built fully owned ground operations at each Airport, as concepts adopted with my input. I was also involved in upgrading the aircraft type ex Maastricht to an 8 tonne APT due to increased volumes and initiating a new daily flight from Lille to Coventry completely from scratch to support the agricultural spares and fork lift truck spares market sector.

I am proud to have held a position on the Group Main Board of an AIM listed Public Limited Company (PLC), turning over nearly £30m.I joined Business Direct to help in a general operations capacity and was appointed to the Group Main Board after 12 months delivering significant successes for the business, within the Express and In Night divisions.My main responsibility was input to Group Board decisions within a near £30m rapidly growing business, identifying strategy and developing the business plan.I was initially responsible for a separate £14m P&L which included a number of service offerings across multiple sites:2 Man Specialist Delivery Nationwide Network - tail lift and stairwalkers/moving call centres/serversTechnical Courier - Nationwide Network operating out of 8 sitesWarehousing (Norsk Data 25000sq ft in Stafford) & (Xerox Partsbank 20000sq ft in Watford) PUDO operations across partner networks FSL operating out of all 8 sitesSameDay CourierIntelligent Locker Box and maintenance of box networkI created and implemented a strategic partnership which led to the establishment of a separate business in Europe (Business Direct Aviation), which became BDAviation Ltd, and now BDA (Bespoke Distribution Aviation), based in Eire, but with operations in UK, NL and DE.

This was a short term role restructuring a £60m failing business.NCN was a parcel delivery business grouping together 130 independent courier companies into one entity.I was responsible for strengthening the independent courier network and trying to widen the service offering, through managing, sourcing and changing delivery partners. Despite some initial success and working with some tremendous partner companies, the underlying financial situation within the business did not allow time to recover the company.When the owners put the business into administration (which had long been planned I now understand) I migrated >£10m of this business to LYNX Express (contrary to the plan of the owners). I completed a temporary assignment back at LYNX Express for 3 months, having agreed a plan to transfer as much business as possible by bringing together independent courier companies and LYNX Express Senior Management, working mainly with John Sansby and David Burtenshaw, which worked very well given the sale of LYNX to UPS, shortly afterwards.

This was an interesting role working within the National Builders Federation, (part of the Construction Confederation), establishing the Construction Accredited Partner Scheme, I project managed a new development across the Construction Industry which involved setting a new standard of proficiency in Supply Chain Competency, specifically aimed at delivering Partnering solutions and improving procurement procedure relating to the award of Government or Public Sector contracts.This role involved public speaking at industry events and working with national and regional Government including the Private Secretary to Tessa Jowell MP.Gained industry wide acceptance of the CAPS standard as a necessary capability and competency within the construction sector.

This was a key role within the Senior team of Venture Capitalist backed MBOResponsible for Operations/HR within the leading stocktaking business in the UK (£14m).Over 1200 counting staff had to be scheduled to count stock in different retail stores (approx. 50 stores per day), plus a high degree of system integration was required to compare electronic stock levels.I was responsible for Operational, IT development and HR teams within the business, which included the migration of 1000 PAYE employees to Worker status. I was involved in the negotiations and due diligence surrounding the eventual sale of the business to Christie Group plc in 2003 and exited the new Christie led venture after the sale of the business.

I signed a compromise agreement with LYNX Express to retain my equity which involved staying out of the Logistics sector for 12 months. We disagreed about the acquisition of Red Star for £1.This role involved responsibility for National Sales Team and also Regional P&L for Midlands (£14m), within the Security/Cleaning Sectors.

One of 14 Senior Managers and Directors involved in the VC backed MBO of LYNX Express (£150m) in 1996.Head of a high technology, small vehicle overnight system with £6m P&L responsibilityRecruited over 100 new franchisees, generating £1.3mSimultaneously opened from a standing start 17 Sameday branches – circa 150 couriers, 4 Sales Execs, 20+ Operational Staff etc generating a separate £6m P&LImplemented technological solutions across product areas eg Technical Courier & Boot Drop deliveries Reported to LYNX Express Managing Director
