I have worked at the Environment Agency over a decade in our Flood and Coastal Risk Management Department. In this time I have gained significant experience in all aspects of reducing the impacts of flooding to our communities. My career began with ensuring new development does not increase flood risk to others, but quite often finding ways to work with others to shape how a new development could reduce flood risk to existing communities. This could be through influencing the design within the development, providing additional flood storage on site, improving the existing watercourse and and access to it for both the public and for maintenance purposes, or incorporating new flood defences into the design. Prior to the Floods and Water Management Act, I also assessed drainage design and rates, to ensure surface water was managed in a sustainable manner, which was extremely rewarding. Since then, I have helped shape the Environment Agency’s capital programme in the East Midlands. I have worked with our Framework Suppliers in a collaborative way to implement innovative ways to work together to ensure we create the environment for excellence and efficiencies, whilst continually improving our collaborative behaviours. I currently manage our Strategy and National Adaptation Portfolio Board and shape what items need to be considered by our portfolio board members to ensure we are delivering our National FCRM Strategy Ambitions. This role also requires me to directly link back into our area operations teams by ensuring these activities are reflected in the business planning. I manage the Portfolio Boards Risk Register and keep on oversight of our contributions to FCERM efficiencies. I continue to be actively involved in our emergency response to flooding by undertaking the Flood Warning Duty Officer role. The role ensures the right information is provided at the right time, to the correct communities to ensure they can effectively respond to the potential of flooding.
