I am a career changer. I excelled in my previous 16 year career in business and finance. Yet it became clear to me that having a positive, lasting effect on the lives of young people was where I was meant to be. After my career with Fidelity Investments, I worked in a Montessori classroom within Cincinnati Public Schools. I also took classes leading to an MEd in Special Education. It was the work in the classroom that drew me to special education. I worked with small groups of students under a teacher’s direction to help those students overcome skill gaps, become more confident in those skills and become curious learners. At The Children’s Home, I have gained even more valuable experience working with students who needed intensive interventions first as a Support Teacher, then as an Intervention Specialist, and as Lead Intervention Specialist. At the Children’s Home I’ve helped roughly 30% of my students each year transition back to a less restrictive environment in their home school district. I’ve continued to help students with skill gaps, but more importantly, helped them to become successful in a classroom setting so that they could work towards returning to an inclusion classroom. While succeeding in helping our most vulnerable children, I also helped other teachers to become their best by providing assistance with special education paperwork, help with technology in the classroom and ideas for academic and behavior interventions. My success as a resource and mentor to others resulted in my advancement to Lead Intervention Specialist. My background also includes extensive work with standardized testing where I have consistently obtained results that exceed state education department expectations by training and directing adults in scoring math and science according to state provided rubrics.
