Director Of Marketing

Current

London, United Kingdom

Harris Hill is the UK’s leading specialist recruiter for the charity sector, with specialists in fundraising, finance, marketing and many other head office roles. Small-but-successful offshoot Harris Hill Independent Schools is the UK's only recruiter working exclusively in independent education, with some of the country’s most prestigious schools.I’ve driven the brand and marketing strategy for both since 2015 in the company’s first dedicated marketing role, earning promotion to director at Christmas 2018, with a strong element of self-determination from the start in defining the role and developing the brands. As the sole marketing head I’ve had valuable support on SEO management and social media (excluding LinkedIn) from our digital agency, but I’m otherwise directly responsible/to blame for all other marketing activity and the vast majority of content, including both company websites.Since 2015 the business has consistently outperformed the field to enjoy a run of consecutive record-breaking years (until it met this one, of course), and continued growth despite a largely flat market, opening its first regional offices in 2018 and achieving the long-term goal of leading the market in charity recruitment. Naturally that’s for many good reasons – not least the high quality of service, people and leadership – but marketing has also been consistently credited by the business for its significant and valuable contribution. Marketing & Communications Manager

Vauxhall, London

Harris Hill is the UK’s leading specialist recruiter for charities, with specialists in fundraising, finance, marketing and other head office roles. Smaller offshoot Harris Hill Independent Schools works exclusively in independent education, with some of the country’s most prestigious schools.Joining in early 2015 as the company’s first marketing head, I established the marketing function from scratch, developed the brand and marketing strategy, and embarked on a wide-ranging programme of initiatives to raise the company’s profile, enhance the reputation for specialist expertise, and create the strong and distinctive brand identity which had previously been lacking.A few of the key achievements include:• Creating a strong and distinctive brand with a clear visual identity, derived organically from the company's character.• Digital transformation of the Harris Hill site: first via external developer to bring it on brand with a more welcoming user experience, later building a new and largely self-designed site on a new platform with major cost, functionality and UX benefits.• Running a successful content marketing and social media strategy, creating the Harris Hill Blog and regular original content which has helped to define the brand identity, more than doubling LinkedIn followers and boosting SEO and traffic.• Maximising the benefit from sponsoring events including the London Charity Softball League, managing the relationship, staff and logistics of Harris Hill’s involvement, introducing physical and digital initiatives which have transformed brand awareness among a key target audience. • Managing a substantial media budget, increasing media presence through both paid-for and requested content, and the design and creation of all brand guidelines and assets.PORTFOLIOFor further achievements and visual examples of my work, please view or download my portfolio which outlines 12 key initiatives from this and my current role.

Feb 2015 - Dec 2018

Email Marketing Manager

London, England, United Kingdom

Having led the implementation and rollout of email marketing capacity for the business and managed it thereafter, growth in demand for branded email and its importance as a channel led to this becoming a full-time role in its own right in 2014. This fit well with a wider shift in the department towards narrower specialisation, but less so with my preference for putting more of my skills to greater use and expanding them further, prompting the decision to seek a more wide-ranging and creative role.Achievements include:• Managing and deploying all customer marketing email and SMS campaigns for the UK and Ireland, Middle East, South Africa and North America – including content, build, development and delivery• Monitoring performance and driving improvements in deliverability, open rates, traffic generation and ROI• Working closely with the CRM Manager to proactively implement a centralised, robust customer lifecycle contact strategy across the business• Working closely with the digital team to create and promote web content – copywriting for articles and promotional emails• Proactive delivery of new campaign ideas and process improvements – particular strength in focusing on key objectives and delivering against these

Jun 2014 - Jan 2015

Media Marketing Manager

London, United Kingdom

Rebranded as PageGroup in 2012 (and working on many of the relevant materials), my remit expanded further to cover digital channels, giving me responsibility for job advertising across all UK media, while continuing to manage email marketing and other client services. Achievements include:• Working closely with the heads of digital and media to optimise the profitability and effectiveness of online advertising packages, devising and delivering initiatives which drove sales throughout the business• Playing a central role in delivering the ‘Marketing Resource’ – an online, self-service, template-driven approach to meeting day-to-day business requirements for marketing, which was extremely well-received by the business and successfully reduced demand for studio resource

May 2012 - May 2014

Client Services Manager

London, England, United Kingdom

Having successfully trained new starters and become recognised for particular strength in delivering high volumes of work with accuracy and speed, I progressed to Client Services Manager in 2009, managing a team of three direct reports in a new structure which grouped marketing responsibilities by channel rather than brand. Client Services was the largest such group, handling high-volume, fast-turnaround work for all UK brands, such as events material and merchandise, design and content for pitches and presentations, and a weekly slate of press advertising for external clients in the Financial Times, Sunday Times, Marketing Week and other media.I also volunteered to lead the introduction of branded email marketing for the business as a whole, sourcing a suitable platform for extensive trialling, before working with HR and IT teams to roll out access and training worldwide. Achievements include:• Managing a team of assistants, with responsibility for their recruitment, training and development, reviews and eventual succession; all of whom joined at entry level and have since gone on to great success within the company and elsewhere.• Successful management and delivery of all recruitment and brand advertising in UK press, producing over 2,500 high-profile ads with exceptional attention to detail.• Sourcing and implementing the company’s email marketing platform, trialling and developing templates before devising and rolling out training and access for 100+ users across the UK and overseas, to drive business use and generate revenue.• Receiving a ‘star performance in marketing’ award from directors of the business in 2010, based on successful/effective team management and delivery against an exceptional workload.

Account Manager

London, England, United Kingdom

Michael Page International (rebranded as PageGroup in 2012) is a global leader in professional recruitment, and after five years in the agency world at TCS, moving client-side to join their in-house marketing department broadened my experience significantly, particularly into brand marketing. This was split fairly evenly between B2B (promoting the business to potential clients) and B2C (to potential candidates), also managing a high volume of fast-turnaround recruitment advertising and internal campaigns to help drive and support sales teams.Initially structured as an in-house agency, I joined the department in a supporting capacity on the Michael Page Finance ‘account’ before taking sole responsibility for the newly-launched Michael Page Scotland, subsequently becoming lead account manager for the Michael Page Marketing, Human Resources and Technology brands in 2005.Achievements include:• Delivering effective marketing across multiple channels which helped Michael Page Scotland to reach £1 million turnover in its second year of operations, a 40% increase on year one• Working with the managing directors of Michael Page Marketing, a £multi-million business in itself, to plan and implement a successful marketing strategy• Raising the profile of MP Marketing through branding campaigns which achieved superb stand-out in their media and generated significant extra business• Co-ordinating a successful nationwide business development campaign for MP Marketing’s temp division, involving merchandise, direct mail and internal promotions, resulting in 38 jobs and over 300 new client contacts in one day• Increasing MP Finance’s use of non-press channels, particularly direct mail, producing many creative pieces which were instrumental in winning further business• Receiving a departmental award for the best feedback from clients within the business• Managing and training one direct report and another new starter in all aspects of the role

Jun 2003 - Jul 2009

Account Executive

London, England, United Kingdom

TCS was an award-winning recruitment advertising agency renowned for creativity and innovation, which blended fun and informality (in the brand and culture) with a serious commitment to high quality work, making it a fantastic training ground in good practice for creative advertising and marketing.Coordinating campaigns from briefing to delivery, my role as the central liaison between clients, creatives and media required diplomacy and customer management skills, efficiency and scrupulous attention to detail. Starting in a largely internal, supporting capacity, the role quickly became more client-facing with full responsibility for a range of accounts and campaigns.Achievements include:• Leading on key accounts including JPMorgan, Selfridges and HMV, and a successful re-pitch for the Viyella account.• Managing a £75k campaign to recruit 450 staff for the opening of Selfridges’ central Manchester store in 2002, advising on strategy, media and creative choices, and managing delivery across print, press, radio, online and ambient media. The campaign succeeded in staffing the store and won numerous industry awards.• Managing HMV’s annual graduate campaign in 2001 and 2002, the latter being one of the first in recruitment to feature a dedicated microsite, supported by press, online and poster advertising.
