I like solving problems. Over the past year few years, I've helped the Veterans Health Administration communicate better about human resource issues, create a new program office to coordinate veterans' health care, and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic by improving testing capabilities. In the past, I've developed a stronger brand identity for the Fulbright Program, created a successful national advertising campaign to enroll veterans in health care, led an $80 million national program to reduce substance use problems, worked with community development corporations to implement crime prevention strategies, played a key role in the development of Chicago's emergency communications system, and shepherded the Chicago Police Department through a reorganization around community policing principles. The thing that ties all this together is my ability to quickly understand the environment, identify what isn't working, and develop a solution to that problem. I like a challenge and I learn quickly. Because research is key to understanding problems, I've developed some expertise with research techniques, particularly qualitative approaches like focus groups and interviewing. I've written a number of publications including Bringing Victims into Community Policing (U.S. Department of Justice), Building Community Safety (Enterprise Community Partners), and Workplace Screening and Brief Intervention: What Employers Can Do About Excessive Alcohol Use (Milken Institute School of Public Health). I speak pretty fluent Portuguese and can fake it in Spanish.
