David Bloss is a Senior DevOps Engineer at EverOps. He possess expertise in c++, java, databases, php, python and 25 more skills. He is proficient in Japanese. Colleagues describe him as "David and I started working together a couple of years ago and I have been impressed with him from the start. He has been a great addition to my team for several reasons. First, David has a great work ethic. When he is assigned a task he keeps at it until it is complete. Second, David has a comprehensive knowledge of programming techniques that has helped him contribute significantly both to individual programs and to the lab as a whole. His Python knowledge, in particular, has led to him quickly becoming a popular resource for myself and many other lab personnel. In fact, he has given several public talks regarding important Python issues including a how-to for transitioning from Python 2 to 3. Finally, David is always working on improving his skills. He is constantly looking for ways to work more efficiently and he then shares these techniques enthusiastically. In my case he was able to get me to start using Vim after showing me how it could easily be configured to help me write code better and faster. David would be a great addition to any team, both as a contributor himself but also as someone who will help make the team better. " and "David helped our team quickly transition our code repo from Bitbucket to Gitlab. Our particular repo had several complex tests which required integration with other repos, and David did an excellent job sorting out and reorganizing our infrastructure. In his spare time, he is also a Vim and Python enthusiast; his knowledge of Vim and Python side projects are impressive. David's ability to learn quickly and get things done is an asset to any team!"

Senior Software EngineerOpslevel Jul 2023 - PresentToronto, Ontario, CanadaPlatform Engineer building software development accelerating tools for OpsLevel customers and employees.• In my role as a Senior Software Engineer, I successfully led the major upgrade of OpsLevel's Terraform provider from SDKv2 to Terraform Framework. This undertaking mitigates the risk of costly infrastructure misconfigurations and runtime errors, established a solid foundation for future scalability and maintainability, and I provided mentorship and support to junior team members.• Leveraging my expertise in Go(lang) and GraphQL, I developed a code generating program that automates the conversion of OpsLevel's GraphQL API schema into accurate Go data structures used by OpsLevel's Go client. Increased automation in this critical program has expedited development of our command line tool, Terraform provider, kubernetes plugin, and other tools - enabling engineers to deliver more reliable code within reduced time constraints. This has already saved weeks of full time developer effort.• Boosting personal and team development efficacy is a key focus of mine. I have created dozens of workflow automation scripts across many code bases that are used daily by entire teams. I have also improved our CI/CD pipelines, maintained our kubernetes clusters, and terraform infrastructure. -
Software Engineer, Developer ProductivityDbt Labs Nov 2022 - May 2023Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United StatesSoftware Engineer working to boost dbtlabs' developer productivity. My work was split between an Internal Services team, a Release Engineering team, and an OSS Tooling Guild.[Release Engineering Team]• I significantly improved our most critical deployment pipeline by cutting one Github Action's time by 83% (12 minutes down to 2 minutes). This action is responsible for validating and updating values in helm charts that trigger deployments via ArgoCD across an array of microservices.• I developed a JavaScript Github Action that alerts developers when dbt's CI/CD pipelines failure. This action leverage's Slack's API, is tested with MochaJS, and provides developers with instant feedback on their submitted work.• In general, I developed Github Actions/Workflows, Go modules, Taskfiles, Python scripts, and Dockerfiles that integrated with Kubernetes, helm charts, and ArgoCD. [Internal Services Team]• To standardize tool versioning org-wide, I wrote a Go program that reads all "asdf" (tool versioning manager) configurations, shows versions of each tool used by each microservice, downloads those tools/versions locally, and configures those tools for use. Version mismatching was a costly hinderance to many developers and those supporting them (especially with kubectl). This automated program became the de facto means of resolving this issue.• Utilizing Terraform, I updated our OIDC providers and AWS IAM roles to achieve more secure authentication in our CI/CD.[OSS Tooling Guild]• In a day, I developed scripts (using gh cli, bash, awk, rg) that upgraded all deprecated versions of Github Actions used by 100% of dbtlab's CI/CD pipelines. Github was dropping node 12 support for its Github Actions and my work averted a CI/CD crisis at the day before support was dropped.• I mentored developers across multiple teams on Github Actions/workflows best practices, Python packaging, and promoting adoption of org-wide standards. -
Software EngineerLawrence Livermore National Laboratory May 2018 - Nov 2022Livermore, California, United StatesAs a cleared Software Engineer at a national research laboratory, I am responsible for developing and maintaining robust codebases, automating workflow processes, and mentoring scientists in specialized areas of computing. My work concurrently spans across multiple teams and my code is scalable to some of the world's most powerful supercomputers.I created and maintain "Saloon", an open-source Vim plugin that empowers developers with real-time static analysis and code formatting - resulting in better code quality across the Department of Energy.• Provided physics program with 15+ years of metrics comparing performance data on multiple compilers by developing a Python script that parsed, processed, and formatted years of unstructured test data.• Drastically improved developer/value feedback loop by architecting efficient Gitlab CI/CD pipelines for multiple teams migrating away from Bamboo or lacking CI in general.• Refactored and upgraded large C++ program's infrastructure workflow program, documented the process, and delivered two talks on upgrading Python codebases.• Contributed to multiple High Performance Computing projects written in C++, Python, and Shell scripts. -
