Profile bio

About David Bruvelaitis

I have over 15 years of progressively responsible leadership experience that includes my recent Senior Manager position with EXFO. Throughout my career, I have developed the teams, processes, and solutions that allowed organizations to achieve their primary business goals. I translate the big-picture objectives into short-term activities, manage strategically important projects, and serve as the primary problem-solver for critical issues. Additionally, I collaborate effectively with multiple departments to achieve top-priority objectives, balancing between their needs and the organization as a whole. Most importantly, I build top-performing teams through a combination of developing leaders and recruiting top talent. I place a premium on team development and improvement because employees, as the lifeblood of the organization, play an instrumental role in success. On team management, I prefer to use a servant leadership style because that is usually the best way to empower and motivate employees to success; at times, however, a more authoritative approach is required, so I have learned to gauge the situation and use the style that is most appropriate. At every step of my career, I have led teams to consistently excellent results.I have an extensive hands-on background with multiple technologies, including leading-edge solutions and tools. In addition, I am always willing to learn new systems and incorporate them into the organizational framework when they present potential benefits. I thrive particularly in agile, lean, and fast-paced organizations that demonstrate a singular focus on customers’ needs.

Listed skills include Software Development, Telecommunications, Software Design, Ip, and 36 others.

Manager, Embedded Systems

Current

Toronto, Ontario, Ca

May 2019 - Present

Senior Manager

Québec, Québec, Ca

I was promoted to manage all R&D activities for delivering high-performance Network Simulation products to the telecom industry. Leading a team of 25, as well as 2 additional R&D groups, I worked across departments to prioritize products, built the delivery roadmap, and directed activities for our current product releases. Planning and managing 6-figure and 7-figure budgets, I oversaw customer-facing support for the business unit products, serving as the Product Support Business Process Manager. In this role, as well as in other positions, I was recognized by upper management as a top performer in the organization.I established goals for my team members to improve their efficiency throughout the year, with an emphasis on shifting to an ongoing continuous improvement approach. By opening up communications and setting clear expectations, I drove an improvement in efficiencies and overall team morale. An additional focus was the development and implementation of new processes. In this respect, I played a key part in integrating the SCRUM process within the business unit (major releases increased from 2 to 4 per year), created an agile process to move feature requests from ideas to viable feature descriptions, and established a process to review active engagements (leading to a material decrease in escalations and higher customer satisfaction). Responding to dramatic changes in the business in my 2nd year as Senior Manager, I improved operational efficiency, transitioned additional leadership to Canada, established proper relationships with the India team to ensure successful collaboration, and consolidated product support roles for all product lines. In response to the cloud-based disruption of the telecommunications industry, I mobilized 2/3 of the R&D team to quickly migrate the products to run on the cloud (OpenStack and Google), along with instituting other solutions that ensured our effective transition to this new framework.

Sep 2015 - Oct 2018

Manager, R&D

Québec, Québec, Ca

I was promoted to lead a team of 14 software developers in interacting with a global team of 130 on software development activities, with full SDLC accountability. Additionally, I mentored our development team in India (including on-site visits), recruited and hired team members, conducted performance review, and ensured adherence to corporate and regulatory goals (e.g. TL9000 requirements). Serving as the Product Support Business Process Manager for the business unit, I conducted annual updates and established annual goals, as well as managing the write-up of SR&ED tax credits for the business unit. Among my achievements, I was recognized by senior leadership for my efforts in quickly resolving a precarious relationship with a demanding customer (multimillion-dollar engagement on an unfamiliar product). By expediting our ramp-up on Wireless Core technology, visiting the customer on site and building trust, I maintained the relationship and oversaw the engagement team for two years.Additionally, I assisted our team in resolving a system porting issue by leading the team in a multi-pronged strategy: reviewing the problem; conducting an overall performance evaluation; determining performance profiling on Intel; and expediting a “get time” method to fix the performance issues.Impacting the organization as a member of the Jira Scrum Steering Committee, I provided input that shaped procedures which were ultimately implemented company-wide; additionally, I contributed to Jira’s deployment and broad adoption.

Jan 2013 - Aug 2015

Principal Designer / Product Improvement Lead

Québec, Québec, Ca

During this period, I progressed steadily from a developer to team lead role to management responsibilities. As a Principal Designer, I managed day-to-day operations of the development team and contributed throughout the entire development lifecycle, from planning to rollout. In this position, I completed architecture designs, conducted technology research, and contributed to project planning, estimating, and resource assignment activities, as well as technical coaching on various technology functions. As a Product Improvement Lead, I contributed to Tier 2 customer support, recommended product configuration fixes and work-arounds to Tier 1 support, initiated debugging sessions with customers, and oversaw the release management of patches among other functions. As a hands-on leader and contributor, I supplied measurable, substantial value on a series of product initiatives. I doubled the capacity and performance for a previously under-performing sipFlex application, collaborating with senior team members to update compiler and facilitate a 30% performance gain.I played a critical part in quickly reducing the number of open tickets by creating an open ticket tracker and standardizing the release process so that all fixes adhered to the same process.I was a primary catalyst for the development of a DevOps pipeline for the business, resulting in quicker status updates for builds and unit tests as well as a reduction in unexpected problems at release time.

Mar 2008 - Jan 2013

Senior Development Engineer

Ca

As a Senior Development Engineer, I designed and developed various network test solutions using C++, Java, and PostgreSQL, participating in all facets of the software development lifecycle. Throughout this period, I contributed as both a leader and engineer to various initiatives, including designing the architecture of an industry-leading SBC testing product that lasted through multiple generations of technology (Power PC to Intel, single-core to multi-core processors).I was chosen to join a select team and address problems with our flagship product InterWatch 95000. Identifying and resolving several issues, I enabled quick turnaround fixes for customers and instilled a sense of ownership within the team culture. For our Sip Endpoint Simulator product, I drove a 4x increase in performance as well as creating easy-to-debug capabilities (reverse-engineering the application and rearchitecting the code so that it could run on a single CPU).Additionally, I created a highly customizable, high-performance/capacity Sip simulation application sipFlex. Developing the application architecture, and collaborating with team members on implementation, I created an architecture that was subsequently reused to build multiple other protocol simulators.

Nov 2003 - Mar 2008

Software Developer

Nettest Canada

I developed Windows-based software with a PCI card adapter for the WinPharaoh ATM product, working with a team of 10 developers. Handling Client/GUI, Server, and Device Driver development activities, I contributed to the development of a stable, easy-to-use, and high-performance product targeting network operators. In this capacity, I worked jointly with the Hardware design team and the Customer Support group to resolve problems.
