Initially hired as a Paramedic, I rapidly moved into a leadership role based on my organization and leadership skills to bring together strong functional teams able to operate in austere environments with a safety and accountability focus during the deployment.Deputy Commander and second in charge of the 150-member New Mexican Disaster Medical Assistance Team (NM-1 DMAT) that responded to numerous events of national significance since 2004, including multiple hurricanes in FL, LA, and TX. Hurricane Katrina: Team was initially assigned to the Superdome, then moved to Baton Rouge for mas-care operations.California Wildfires - Haiti Earthquake - Oklahoma Tornadoes - Louisiana Flooding - Puerto Rico Hurricane Response as well as standby for Events of National Significance. Developed leadership, planning, and liaison skills operating in time/life critical environments, coordinated and supervised DMAT training exercises, and provided annual medical assistance to 7000 participants in Bataan Memorial Marathon, White Sands, NM.

As Deputy Chief I oversaw approximately 90% of the annual departmental budget, and active in setting the budget’s priorities to ensure focus on those priorities was maintained for the full year. Additionally, I was responsible for all Operational components of the Fire Department, including fleet and facilities. I was responsible for all disciplinary actions. All Operational grievances were presented and investigated by me.

Supervised A Shift, consisting of 28 Firefighters, Engineers, and Captains. Additional oversight was provided to the EMS group, the PEER support group, and the ARFF group. As a Battalion Chief, I was assigned initially to an Operational position, then transferred to an Administrative role.

Functioned as Planning Section Chief for Medical Response for the Republican National Convention in August 2008.Operated within the Logistic and Operation sections for Hurricane Ike in September 2009.Developed a working understanding of the Federal Government's National Incident Management System (NIMS), as well as the full scope of operations involved in National and International disaster deployments.

After 10 years as a volunteer Firefighter with the Animas Fire Protection District, I transitioned into a reserve position with the Durango Fire and Rescue, where I worked my way through the ranks of Firefighter, Engineer, HAZMAT Technician, Medical Officer, and Lieutenant.
