I started out as a student at Teranet Inc. completing spatial data manipulation within the Geodatabase and learning map maintenance work flows. Excelling at my duties I was trained to do some cadastral mapping and land parcel maintenance. This involved manipulating CAD data within a GIS environment to match land survey plans. Consolidating and splitting land parcels, including subdivision plans, allowed me to gain a strong understanding of mapping workflows and the data managed at Teranet. I then moved from these tasks into a new project to manipulate spatial data for migration into the eMap product. This was a 9 month long project which I was able to gain a substantial scope of the geodatabase. Working with a team of 5 other students, I was partially responsible for training and managing their daily workflow and QA. As a team of students, we were asked by our supervisor to propose a new data model for the mapping department. I took team lead on the project, and I coordinated a proposal on how we would create the mapping database starting from the ground up. By recognizing weak areas of the current data and workflow we were able to present an idea which would create a 'smarter' database and GIS. I then presented to a board of management with very positive feedback. Following these, I was tasked to come up with new QA/QC processes and queries to run on the database, using SQL script within GeoMedia, for data integrity. While doing so, I was able to suggest areas of improvement for development of a smarter GIS database. Besides the technical experience, I gained valuable professional skills through various company functions. All of which have become a part of who I am as a professional.
