Profile bio

About David Harpe

I've had an interesting set of careers. I started in broadcasting at the young age of 14, while at the same time tinkering with electronics and mainframe computers. Through high school and college I did for-hire software development on Apple III's and TRS-80s while working at almost every TV station in Louisville, KY. After college I did broadcasting for a few years, but computers and the Internet were more exciting at the time. I left TV for IT support, then software development. Somehere duing all of this I went on tour with Ozzy Osbourne and Ozzfest to blog the 1998 tour (how many people can say THAT? :-)). Then after a lucky break a couple of friends and myself ended up selling our 3-guys-in-a-garage Internet company to Sony Music. After 9/11 and some changes at Sony brought our venture to a close I decided to go it on my own with a mix of consulting and creative efforts. I started a photography business, developed software, freelanced for the Associated Press, Reuters and various other publications, developed a few web sites, sold a few things, and generally had a ball while learning a lot about running my own business. Then a new opportunity popped up in television - which was far more exciting now that the Digital transition had happened. Off to Denver I went to be the VP of Engineering for the Fox/CW duopoly. We did a lot of fun projects including developing IP backpacks long before Dejero/LiveU/TVU ever thought of it, built a pretty big IP network for our fun all up and down the front range, and was the beta site for Tribune's broadcast software development efforts. Another opportunity opened up at the legendary WGN-TV in Chicago. A moving van was loaded and I took over the reins as the VP Engineering for seven years. Live sports a plenty, including being pool for the Cubs World Series parade. Then we were bought by Nexstar and shortly thereafter we ended up launching the NewsNation news network out of the WGN facility on a very tight timeline during COVID. So satisfying to be able to hire a bunch of really talented crew at a time when no one was hiring and people were really hurting for gigs. After I finished in Chicago I ended up in Los Angeles for a 2 1/2 year gig at the Fox O&O there. Great experience but when my dream job opened up at KCNC in Denver I decided to head back to the mile high city for another tour in the high country. Such a great station, such a great crew and ever since my first time in Denver I've always wanted to work here. So cool how things just seem to work out!
