About David Harpe

I've had an interesting set of careers. I started in broadcasting at the young age of 14, while at the same time tinkering with electronics and mainframe computers. Through high school and college I did for-hire software development on Apple III's and TRS-80s while working at almost every TV station in Louisville, KY. After college I did broadcasting for a few years, but computers and the Internet were more exciting at the time. I left TV for IT support, then software development. Somehere duing all of this I went on tour with Ozzy Osbourne and Ozzfest to blog the 1998 tour (how many people can say THAT? :-)). Then after a lucky break a couple of friends and myself ended up selling our 3-guys-in-a-garage Internet company to Sony Music. After 9/11 and some changes at Sony brought our venture to a close I decided to go it on my own with a mix of consulting and creative efforts. I started a photography business, developed software, freelanced for the Associated Press, Reuters and various other publications, developed a few web sites, sold a few things, and generally had a ball while learning a lot about running my own business. Then a new opportunity popped up in television - which was far more exciting now that the Digital transition had happened. Off to Denver I went to be the VP of Engineering for the Fox/CW duopoly. We did a lot of fun projects including developing IP backpacks long before Dejero/LiveU/TVU ever thought of it, built a pretty big IP network for our fun all up and down the front range, and was the beta site for Tribune's broadcast software development efforts. Another opportunity opened up at the legendary WGN-TV in Chicago. A moving van was loaded and I took over the reins as the VP Engineering for seven years. Live sports a plenty, including being pool for the Cubs World Series parade. Then we were bought by Nexstar and shortly thereafter we ended up launching the NewsNation news network out of the WGN facility on a very tight timeline during COVID. So satisfying to be able to hire a bunch of really talented crew at a time when no one was hiring and people were really hurting for gigs. After I finished in Chicago I ended up in Los Angeles for a 2 1/2 year gig at the Fox O&O there. Great experience but when my dream job opened up at KCNC in Denver I decided to head back to the mile high city for another tour in the high country. Such a great station, such a great crew and ever since my first time in Denver I've always wanted to work here. So cool how things just seem to work out!

  • Kdvr - Fox31 Denver
    Vice President, Technology
    Kdvr - Fox31 Denver Jan 2010 - Jun 2014
    Denver, Colorado, Us
Chief technology engineer for KDVR/KWGN/KFCT in Denver, Colorado.Responsible for all technology operations at this amazing Market 17 Fox/CW duopoly. With an amazing 20-person technical staff we handled over 15 hours of live news daily. Technical infrastructure included an extensive downlink installation on the roof, two high-atop-the-mountain transmitter sites above Golden, Colorado, a third high-atop-a-big-tower site in Pierce, Colorado, along with ENG remote sites up and down the front range, all on fun-to-maintain mountaintops. During my tenure we constructed an extensive bi-direction IP-based microwave network connecting all of our transmitter and remote sites along with key sites downtown with licensed 400Mb point-to-point microwave links. We also built our own portable IP encoder/decoder/teleprompter backpack - which for the day was revolutionary and gave us a huge competitive advantage. As I left the TVU/LiveU/Dejero wave was beginning, and I felt great about the fact that we had engineered this forward-thinking network perfect for backhaul from these technologies.Fox/CW affiliate in the Mile High City! We have three transmitters, two studios, eight live trucks, two sat trucks, a huge building with about 15 dishes on the roof, nine ENG receive sites, four separate program content channels, a staff size of over 200, and we do over 75 hours of live content each week in full HD from field to air.
  • Daveomatic Enterprises Llc
    Owner
    Daveomatic Enterprises Llc 2002 - Jan 2010
After a successful stint as CTO for Emazing, I decided to do my own thing for awhile. I started DaveOMatic Enterprises as a holding company for various ventures. I started a production studio - David Harpe Photography - which was based in Louisville's Glassworks building. The studio produced video and still photography client for over 30 clients. During this time I was a freelance photographer/videographer for the Louisville Courier-Journal, Associated Press, Reuters, and Getty Images. I also did a whole lot of software development and consulting for various clients. Accomplishments include design and development of a LAMP-based art gallery management system for one of my clients. I was also the lead photographer and post-production manager for the creation of a 200-page book titled "Stephen Rolfe Powell: Glassmaker", chronicling the works of the world-famous artist. Starting and running a business from scratch by myself was one of the most valuable things I have done in my life. Being personally responsible for every aspect of an operation is a daunting task and you learn so much about yourself when you do it. I have used what I learned during this time in every position I have held since.
  • Emazing, Inc. A Division Of Sony Music Entertainment
    Co-Founder, Svp/Cto
Emazing, Inc. A Division Of Sony Music Entertainment Jan 1999 - Jan 2002
The classic "three guys in a garage create a dot com and sell it" story. I was the technical part of the "three guys", creating the software to drive our startup "Emazing.com", an email newsletter company. I wrote the original mass email delivery system along with a content management system. We got it off the ground on a single server installed at a colocation facility built into the back of an old doctor's office, and when my business partner had a lucky phone call with the right person the company was sold to Sony Music Entertainment and we became Sony Employees. My team quickly grew to 20 people, and we redid my original architecture to go from 10,000 email message a day to over 20 million, all running on Sun hardware using Oracle on an EMC box. 9/11 happened and Sony had issues with Playstation, which caused cutbacks and a shut down of our tiny little group. But the email system my team developed lived on - continuing to provide email delivery services for other divisions within the Sony empire long after I left. A great experience with a great team. My only regret is that it ended far too soon.
  • Pc World Online
    Director, Email Newsletter Technical Operations
    Pc World Online 1997 - 2000
    San Francisco, Ca, Us
This was in the very early days of the Internet when AOL was king and Internet connections were dial-up. As the Internet shifted from being an university geek playground to a mainstream distribution channel companies realized the potential for distributing content using this new medium. A former coworker started up a division within PC World to distribute tips and techniques via email to PC World subscribers. I was hired to make it work technically.I worked remotely from my apartment, a unique arrangement at the time. One of the biggest challenges was convincing AT&T to install an ISDN line in an apartment complex. :-) I developed an entire technical infrastructure for PC World to do the email deliveries, a side business at the time but would eventually grow much larger.
