David Hoffmann Email and Phone Number
I am a climate scientist with a background in Geography and have worked in the research and consulting sector. My lifelong passion for the climate system and accompanying extreme events and their impacts on the environment and society fuel my ongoing motivation to pursue work in this sector. My academicachievements and my work experience in both research and industry prove that I am focused, driven as well as flexible and curious. During my PhD I examined the representation of drought on different time scales using various indices to evaluate the importance of evaporation vs precipitation in respect to data uncertainty in observations and climate models.I completed my Bachelor of Science in Geography and Master of Science in Climate and Environmental Change in Germany with focus on physical Geography, risk assessment and urban climate. My fields of interest for employment are in risk assessment, climate research and data analyses.

Phd StudentMonash University Nov 2016 - Nov 2020Melbourne, AustraliaDrought is an inherent part of climate variability, significantly affecting ecosystems and economies. Effective monitoring of drought is crucial, and drought indices have been developed to do this by tracking variables such as precipitation, evaporation and soil moisture. However, indices are affected by uncertainties from measurements in observations and parametrizations in climate models. My PhD research showed that given the uncertainties in measurements, precipitation alone is often sufficient for drought detection. The behaviour of the indices in climate models also reveal systematic limitations in the representation of drought processes, including an overestimation of the importance of evaporation for drought. -
