Developed methods for single cell analysis in human neurons.The first of my two main projects involved "Whole Genome Analysis" of individual neurons, using both post-mortem tissue and human induced pluripotent stem cells. We explored an idea that genetic alterations (SNPs, copy number variation, aneuploidy, etc) in neurons not only promote functional diversity in the human brain but this variation can also influence an individual's behaviour, like schizophrenia or autism spectrum disorders, for example. We also explored the "disease in a dish" model where we showed that human induced pluripotent stem cells recapitulate somatic genetic variation signatures found in neurons and skin cells.My second project aimed to understand the gene expression profile of memory-activated neurons. While developing protocols to improve yield of low starting amounts of mRNA, we looked at how gene expression shapes a neuron's ability to trigger memory coding and retrieval.
