HealthShare Solutions are used by hospital networks, regions, and countries to share electronic health records and make them available to doctors and patients. A typical installation may have dozens of apps that communicate with each other to receive, store, share, process, and provide access to medical records, lab results, and patient demographics. The apps may run on separate systems or on one or a few systems. Customer problems range from systems being completely down to particular lab results not being stored or displayed correctly.To resolve problems, I use multiple techniques including connecting remotely to live production systems, examining data as it moves through a system or between systems (HL7 or IHE), examining the source code (ObjectScript, XSLT, JavaScript), adding debugging code, and reproducing the problem on test systems.I routinely collaborate with other Developer Support Engineers to solve difficult problems, and I provide guidance and mentoring to our recent hires.

Since each hospital or lab typically has its own ID for a patient, Patient Index is used to determine which medical records belong to the same person so a doctor can see all of a patient’s records. This is done using a probabilistic model to weight comparisons of names, birth dates, social security numbers, gender, address, and telephone to account for typos, data entry errors, and regional differences in the data. Researched the statistical models and techniques that can be used for this problem. Developed procedures to tune the model for each customer and operational procedures for the customers to use after going live.

Consulted full time for Banda Sports/The Table Tennis Pioneers, a sporting goods wholesaler/retailer based in Montreal. • Designed, coded, tested, and deployed a custom merchant website. Previous website was poorly organized, hard to maintain, and did not interface well with the company's internal information systems. New website makes it much easier for customers to find information or browse products and fully supports specialized product combinations and the company's Frequent Buyer Program and Affiliate Program. New website consists of 32,000 lines of PHP code, 13,000 lines of comments, and 95 tables in a MySQL database. Wrote all the code. Organized the content and wrote new content. • Managed the Customer Service Department. The department handles all contact with customers, processes orders, handles all problems and special requests, and deals with suppliers. As manager, developed, wrote, and maintained over one hundred written policies to handle almost all situations. Department went from having five customer service reps and, during one holiday season, taking three days to reply to a customer's phone call to only needing two customer service reps and replying to all customers promptly. With the department running smoothly, one of the reps took over the role of department manager.• Wrote, co-wrote, and edited magazine advertisements, marketing material, email newsletters, and product descriptions. • Completely changed the way the company went about hiring. Rewrote the job descriptions, screened the resumes, developed a questionnaire for candidates to fill out, decided which candidates to phone interview, helped do the phone interviews, talked to the candidate's references, helped decide which candidates to have visit the company, and helped determine whether to make the candidate an offer. Trained employees on what to look for when interviewing a candidate and how to evaluate a candidate's suitability.

Over twenty-one years experience in the fields of statistics, applied mathematics, geodesy, photogrammetry, scientific computing, software development. • Developed a new version of an application for estimating the life-cycle costs of CRT displays used in aircraft. The manufacturers use the application to plan their bids on large military contracts. The application combines a GUI front end with a computational back end that had been developed over two decades. Rewrote the back end to modernize it, implemented new features, and developed new algorithms.• Improved the quality of airborne digital imagery products. Developed a program to correct for falloff in image intensity due to the harsh operational environment. Developed new algorithms and software for geometric camera calibration and photogrammetric adjustment of camera positions and orientations. Developed an interactive GUI tool enabling analysts to measure image coordinates of ground control points for image-to-image matching. Regular use of these tools by production staff improved accuracy from 10's of meters to 1–2 meters and eliminated visible tears from the mosaic products. Four years after development, all the tools were still in regular use.• Modeled the atmospheric transport of pollutants from the 1991 Kuwait oil fires. Combined wind and rain data with atmospheric models to do short- and long-range predictions of plume location and effects on health and crops. The classified customer used the weekly projections to send aircraft out to observe the plume. The customer briefed the results at the highest levels of the U.S. government. Co-developed the models. Wrote the software to implement the models. Helped develop the software to display the results.• Determined how much gravity data the Defense Mapping Agency needed to collect to support the Trident submarine program. The Navy customer stated that our analysis saved $40 million in unnecessary surveys.
