During my tenure in this role I expanded the existing team to 12 engineers while taking on another team responsible for the development Akamai's core monitoring system. I had been successfully leading a globally distributed team across 4 countries and 5 time zones with a remote-first approach that when the pandemic arrived we didn't have to change the way we worked much at all.During this time I also: * Continued to iterate on our intake and work tracking processes from quarterly estimates to a more standard Agile approach resulting in more accurate estimates of delivery * Mentored and coached engineers to provide steady career growth and opportunity as the team grew - including during the transition to remote work due to COVID-19 * Participated in the full life cycle of multiple projects from ideation, through design and development and support.

I was asked to start a team within Systems Operations to maintain a number of tools used internally by Operations which were previously maintained in a crowd-sourced model within Operations. In two years I: * Instituted practices and policies around coding standards, reviews and intake process * Grew from a team of myself to 5 engineers in 3 countries * Operationalized various sytems from single-box solutions to horizontally scaling web applications and replicated Postgres cluster

I spent several years as a software engineer in the TCP Optimization, Enterprise Acceleration and System Operations organizations working on a variety of products both customer-facing and internally used, such as: * A monitoring application as part of an on-site customer appliance * An internally used tool to take Akamai machines in and out of service to perform disruptive operations * Integrating code coverage tools like gcov to ensure adequate unit and integration tests existed

I began at Akamai in the Network Operations department focusing on keeping Akamai’s distributed network available through the use of operational best practices and automation. This was an ideal introduction to working on a network of “planetary scale” that comes with a unique set of challenges. My contributions during this time were * Automating rote tasks whenever possible to reduce toil and fatigue * Act as the final escalation point within Network Operations - taking new scenarios and creating a response that would become standard operating procedure for future occurrences * Review software deployment policies and practices used throughout the company to advise where we can add efficiency and safety

Lead the overall system management and operation for Towerstream - a fixed wireless broadband provider. Work included developing a provisioning system as well as deploying a mixture of custom developed and OSS monitoring solutions to enable onboarding new customers while enhancing availability and support of the network.
