In 1969, after Peace Corps and law school, I became a legal aid lawyer in Roanoke, Virginia. In 1973, I moved to a trial lawyer's position with the EEOC in Washington, DC. In 1975, I joined the Postal Service's then office of Labor Law as a litigator, and in 1985, I became a Postal Service appellate lawyer, specializing in employment law, although I handled contract, tort, and constitutional cases, too, as well as others. During my years with the Postal Service, I litigated in all twelve regional United States Courts of Appeals, as well as in the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.In April 2008, after defending one of the largest employers in the country for more than 30 years, I retired from federal service and am looking for other sorts of legal work to do -- consulting or litigation or perhaps a teaching position, either here or abroad.Specialties: 13 years litigating individual and class EEO actions in federal district courts, 23 years representing the Postal Service in federal courts of appeals. Wrote Common Sense about Common Claims, 25 Hofstra Lab. & Emp. L.J. 33 (2008), and The Importance of Being Earnest: Pleading and Maintaining a Class Action for the Purpose of Binding Class Members, 6 Fordham Law Rev.904 (1981). The latter is summarized in 7A Wright & Miller, Federal Practice and Procedure, § 1771, at 493-494, n11 (2005).

Until 1985, I was a district court litigator, specializing in EEO class actions. In 1985, I moved to appellate work and to assisting trial counsel with motions and strategies. Although an employment law specialist, I engaged in many other fields, from torts to remedies, to procuments, to civil rights. While working I published Common Sense about Common.
Worked as a trial attorney for the EEOC, representing it in the federal district courts.
In 1969 I was hired by Roanoke Legal Aid Society in Roanoke, Virginia, where I represented clients at all levelrs of the state and federal courts, including the United States Supreme Court. In 1972, I became its General Counsel.
