Third Dimension are a fantastic company specialising in the Design & manufacture of hand held Laser measuring devices. During a brief contract with Third I worked as a Product Designer and developed a number of ideas from concept to realisation and tooling. Although brief this was very beneficial period for both myself and for Third, for which I am very grateful.
Senior Product Designer/Project Team Leader
Initially employed as a Designer, I worked on a number of projects from Vacuum Cleaners, to floor tools, to scrubber dryers. After 2 years I was promoted to Senior Design Engineer and was responsible for the Design & Development of the Scrubber Dryer range. Here I looked after a team of up to 8 engineers and we have successfully improved the existing range and designed new products. In terms of design the scrubber dryers encompass many aspects including: injection moulding, rotational moulding, sheet metal and chassis fabrication, aluminium casting, electrical/electronic components and motors & transaxle drives. Whilst requiring consideration for Human Interface, Ergonomics and UsabilityAt Numatic I have gained a huge amount of experience in many aspects of design and in project management. I have grown into the role of Team/Project Leader and have a greater appreciation for project time plans, regular design reviews & clear communication with all departments including customers. This has all fundamentally led to the right products being delivered on time and within budget.
Solidworks Design Engineer
Altex is a sub-contracting company working for many blue chip clients across a variety of industries. While at Altex I have worked on a number of projects from merchandising units for HMV, to a metal fabricated bicycle shelter for a local school. My main duties involved prototyping designs using Solidworks, and transferring that data through Radan to the CNC laser, punch and folding machines for production. Altex provided me with a better understanding of core engineering, in terms of mechanical design and metal cutting/forming.
Solidworks Design Engineer
Due to a lull in available jobs within the design industry, I decided to undertake some contract work. Some of the jobs worked on include - Development of a 3 axis machine for milk sampling, Modelling of a CD display stand for HMV, Design of a ticket bin for the public transport sector and Modelling of fuel systems and inter coolers in the aerospace industry for the analysis of fluid flow. During this time I had a diverse amount of design and engineering experience whilst maintaining my Solidworks abilities
Product Designer
As the biggest plastic moulding manufacturers in the UK Addis gave me invaluable experience in the design and manufacture of plastic products.During my time at Addis some of my major projects included: - A range of trolleys for commercial cleaning, a range of twin-shot brushware and a range of food storage. With each project I had initial freedom with concepts, which were analysed at focus groups; I then developed prototypes both physically and modelled in 3D. Once proved out with FEA I liaised with toolmakers for the production of the parts. As a designer I was allowed to forward my ideas and design products with my own individual style with successful results. Here I built a real appreciation for the constraints when designing mass produced injection moulded parts.
Project Engineer
At my first employment from university I was involved with the design, testing and manufacture of anti-vibration components for the automotive industry. I worked within a team of 5, which was responsible for 24 parts in total. During the 7 months I took responsibility of 4 components and helped on several other projects.Main responsibilities included Design & Development issues, CAD Drafting, planning and paperwork (Fault Tree Analysis, PFMEA etc.), testing of parts and materials in the laboratory and involvement in production and process concerns.
Design & Development Engineer
During my University placement year I was involved in a project known as ‘Anti-Trap', which involved the design & development of an extruded rubber product, to protect from entrapments in electrically operated windows on vehicles.Main Responsibilities included Design issues within a team and as an individual, writing test reports, DFMEA's, DVP&R and specifications. In addition one of the designs worked on by myself was used in the final production and was thus patented in my name.
