Genesis Motion Solutions (formerly Genesis Robotics) is a leading innovator in actuators for automation and robotics. As part of the senior leadership team, I was a key member working on strategy and overall business management. The direct drive actuators developed under my leadership have been the catalyst for a change in the architecture of certain classes of robot, allowing safe operation at higher speeds. As Genesis expanded the direct drive product portfolio, I shifted roles to generate the next disruptive actuator technology.I led the research and development of new actuator technology, including identifying, selecting and developing technology that had potential to expand the robotics and automation industry by offering functionality that would allow our customers to produce new types of machines. Highlights:* Met with customers and partners to determine future actuation needs and prepared plans, presentations, and commercial proposals in support of business development. Conducted several successful collaborative R&D projects with customers proving new actuation technology in new classes of robot* Created research and development metrics, KPIs, and dashboards that provide visibility of progress and ensure accountability across all R&D projects* Developed a methodology to assess the state of technology and its readiness for market and used it to rank, prioritize, and select which R&D programs to invest in* Mentored engineers in R&D and other departments, several of whom have gone on to become successful managers* Created an IP strategy and facilitated the growing patent portfolio. Implemented systems to identify IP being generated within the company and to protect IP that has strategic value. We divested of intellectual property that was not strategic to the company, thereby reducing intellectual property costs and simultaneously improving the strategic value of the patent portfolio

Corvus Energy is the leading manufacturer of large scale lithium-ion energy storage systems for large maritime vessel propulsion systems. I was responsible for new product development, intellectual property strategy, battery safety, product regulatory compliance, and sustaining engineering. The Orca Energy product was developed under my direction, and it has dominated the maritime electric propulsion market since its introduction, installed on more than 250 large vessels world wide.Highlights include:* Hands-on leadership of the development of the Orca Energy battery system, from foundational R&D through to delivery on first commercial projects* Led the patent protection for the new technology introduced in Orca, which resulted in considerable barrier to competitors* Led team to implement test-driven-development of battery management system firmware, cutting regression-testing time from weeks to hours* Corvus’ IP portfolio expanded rapidly through the execution of processes I developed to identify, rank, select, and file patentable innovations developed by the engineering team* Created a succession plan and mentored engineers who later took on greater roles within the company

Responsible for new product development and sustaining engineering, I led Corvus's highly skilled team of software, firmware, electronics, mechanical, electrical, and test engineers. Highlights:* Improved the development test safety and product safety by implementing a formal risk assessment process* Documented and instilled engineering systems and practices certified to ISO 9000* Implemented agile methodology for hardware and firmware development (using JIRA and Confluence) while satisfying the rigorous quality demands of the highly regulated marine industry* Significant improvements to the safety and performance of legacy Corvus products, even as the cost to manufacture has been reduced by half

I co-founded Poncho Wilcox Engineering Inc, which provides contract engineering for technology companies, particularly in the area of product development and quality systems. A hands-on principal engineer, I kept my skills sharp by contributing to the technical content. Some projects included:* PartsMinder - Managed a team of developers to create a cloud-hosted application for purchasing and supply chain management. Developed significant portions of the code base.* Iron Hawk – Developed a cloud-based application for scheduling heavy construction equipment. * Poncho Wilcox Energy – Negotiated the intellectual property license agreements for the core technology and conducted feasibility studies for the implementation of biomass power plants.* Greenwell Renewable Energy – Managed a team of mechanical engineers and technologists to design a prototype reciprocating engine to extract power from high-pressure geothermal wells.* Stenovations – Managed the design transfer, on-going engineering, and boutique manufacturing of sensory systems for specialty keyboards.

Tactex Controls was a technology company with a strong patent portfolio. Technology was developed internally and subsequently licensed to four international companies in the diverse fields of aviation, medical devices, robotics, and consumer devices.

Tactex developed products based on patented force and pressure sensing technology. Some of the products developed include:• Dementia Care Sensor – An accurate sensory system used to trigger in-room automation and alerts.• Automatic Control of Hospital Bed – Sensors and control system to monitor the surface pressure between the mattress and patient so as to prevent pressure sores.• Touch-based Music Sensors – Two award-winning musical interface products based on patented touch sensing technology.

RSI designed and implemented electronic-over-hydraulic control systems for heavy equipment and heavy hydraulic robotic systems. RSI successfully completed projects for ISO 9001 certified clients, including P&H Mining Equipment, Spar Aerospace (now MD Robotics), Caterpillar, and the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory.

David led the development of electronic and hydraulic control systems for robots used in forestry, subsea maintenance, and mining.
