I thrive on connecting with people.In my experience as a face-to-face sales person and as a sales trainer, I would have to say that that is the part of my roles I have enjoyed the most.I was introduced to the cemetery and funeral service industry by a good friend of mine after 25 years of experience in the insurance industry. For 17 or those years I specialized in Long-term Care Insurance and Individual Disability Income Insurance. Being effective with these products requires a needs-based approach to the sales process. I always enjoyed the connectedness I felt with my customers as well as the many agents and financial advisors that I had trained.Transitioning to cemetery and funeral services took needs-based selling to a new level. To earn someone’s trust on what is often the worst day of that person’s life is a great honor. It is during these times I relied on my ability to handle difficult emotional situations. The ability to maintain focus on identifying customer needs and making the right things happen on the follow-up and fulfillment of those needs was critical.I was responsible for “At Need” cemetery sales and “Pre-need” Cemetery and Funeral Plans. On the “At Need” side, there were many tasks which involved high levels of detail. Collaborating at a high level with Funeral Directors and grounds staff was critical to my role. Learning the needs of your working partner is just as important as learning the needs of your customers when it comes to fulfillment of plans as well as staging a quality event.On the “Pre-need” side, all the experience in needs-based selling came right back to me as I helped customers discover the need for pre-need planning and developed pre-need plans with them. Customers appreciate the peace of mind of knowing things are going to be taken care of. In my first 6 years, I was able to grow my sales an average of 20% a year each year. Having satisfied customers and having healthy sales numbers is where it all comes together, and when things all come together the right way, your work feels like a calling.
