Trombonist David J. Miller studied with Thomas Ashworth while earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Trombone Performance at the University of Minnesota, and with Nitzan Haroz while he completed his Master’s Degree in Trombone Performance at Temple University.He was a member of the Charleston Symphony (SC), and was the Solo Trombonist with the Orquesta Sinaloa de las Artes (Sinaloa, Mexico). He performed for two seasons as Principal Trombonist of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería (Mexico City, Mexico). He has performed with the Atlanta, Baltimore, and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestras; and the Pacific Music Festival Orchestra (Sapporo, Japan). He is currently Principal Trombonist of the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra, and has performed with the Washington Cornett and Sackbutt Ensemble, the Alexandria and Annapolis Symphonies, and the Apollo Orchestra.He is the arranger and a founding member of The Barclay Brass. He has collaborated in video projects with Metropolitan Opera Principal Trumpet (retired) and conductor Mark Gould, and internationally renowned composer Johan de Meij. His arrangements for Barclay Brass were featured in TIME Magazine and the Washington Post.In 2018, David Miller’s transcriptions for brass were performed as part of the internationally broadcast memorial service for Senator John McCain. His arrangements have been performed by members of the Vienna Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago and Cincinnati Symphonies and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. He is internationally published by Hal Leonard, Edition Peters, Edition•S, Baton Music, and Serenissima Music.In 2010, Charles Dutoit conducted the premiere of Miller’s critical edition of Mikhail Glinka’s Ruslan and Ludmila Overture with the Philadelphia Orchestra. In 2018, the US Army Band performed the premiere of his critical edition of the Grøndahl Trombone Concerto with Joseph Rodriguez as soloist. In 2009, his engraving of Puccini arias was recorded by Placido Domingo and the Vienna Philharmonic.As an educator, he was the trombone instructor at the Instituto Superior de Música del Estado de Veracruz in Mexico, and Claflin University in Orangeburg, SC. In 2018, Miller was invited to present his research on Percy Grainger’s “In Dahomey” at the annual Spring Lecture Series in White Plains, NY. He has given master classes in trombone, chamber music, arranging and editing at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, University of Maryland, West Chester University, George Mason University, University of Akron, Kent State and University of Miami Ohio.
