Transferable Skills. That’s what they tell you in career planning these days. ‘They’ also say that jobs exist today that weren’t thought of a few years ago. That’s where I find myself now as Head of Knowledge Management for Barclaycard Payments.Having initially qualified as a Quantity Surveyor and worked in Construction for many years, I moved to design and implement construction software, gained a Masters degree, rode the e-commerce wave in presales, product marketing and sales, shifted into Travel and then Banking in product management, product marketing and commercial strategy - its safe to say I’ve had a rich and varied career. I’ve actually done the day-today jobs that we address in promoting T&E, Travel and B2B purchasing. I’ve worked for ERP vendors and FinTechs, created websites & multimedia content and delivered on the job training to customers and colleagues more times that I can remember. I’ve always leveraged my transferable skills, and I’ve learned and added to my experience, every step of the way – and I still am.The other aspect of this is my personality type. I’ve found that I’m a thinker, coach, teacher. I encourage people to develop, be better, move forward and I support them in so doing.That’s why this new Head of Knowledge Management position in Barclaycard Payments is a good fit for me to bring all my experience and skills together into a role that hasn’t previously existed but, in this environment, where our intellectual property is highly valued, and its use is a key differentiator, it is so very much needed.
