  • Sony Computer Entertainment Europe
    Studio Group Psn Technical Director
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Jul 2008 - Mar 2010
Studio Liverpool, Evolution and BigBig Studios made up the Northwest Studio Group. As Group PSN Technical Director I was responsible for all projects' use of Sony's Playstation Network. This included advising on best practices, suggesting new uses for the present feature set and advocating projects requests to Europe, America and Japan. I was a member of the multi-national WWS PSN Advisory Group of 10-15 members which advised on new features and future directions of the PSN. I proposed many additions and changes to how the PS3 console handled downloads, patches, DRM, Facebook, Trophies, store functionality, etc. I acted as a technical consultant in the formation of the PSP Minis project. I was the Technical Director for the Services Global Working Group whose remit was to aid all studio's move from products towards game services. An outcome of this was my GDC 2010 presentation “Servicing your Game with Feature driven DLC”.
  • Sony Computer Entertainment Europe

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Aug 2006 - Jul 2008

  • Sony Computer Entertainment Europe

Lead Programmer WipEout Fusion & WipEout Pure, responsible for the scheduling of my programmer’s tasks, via Project 2000, and suggesting methods and solutions to any problems we faced, be they programming, art or design issues. Also liaising with the art and design leads informally and formally in our weekly project meeting. For my work on WipEout Pure I was given the commendation in programming by Phil Harrison at SCEE's Malta conference.
  • Acclaim Entertainment
    Research And Development Manager/Lead Programmer
    Acclaim Entertainment Jun 1999 - Aug 2000
After two months of research into progressive meshes I was given control of the new R&D department, made up of one artist and 4 programmers. The tasks we undertook were MAX plugins, various windows based tools and research into such things as subdivision, path finding, lip synching, animation and shadow generation. All research was carried out with the PS2 vector units in mind. My roll was split into lead programmer - reviewing code and giving suggested methods of doing things - and manager - producing project plans (Gantt Charts under Project98) and a weekly report to all directors, project managers and leads.
  • Virtek (Gsi)
    Technical Director
    Virtek (Gsi) Mar 1993 - Dec 1998
My first few years at GSI involved the design and writing of the utilities and 3d library package named "3D-Ware". This was a commercially available tool for the creation and development of 3d applications. Written totally in x86 assembler it was designed to link to any compiler / language. "3D-Ware" was used by such companies as: Big Red Software, for both "Tank Commander" and "Big Red Racing", and Digital, for a basket ball virtual reality demo using VirtualIO glasses. Digital also contracted me to provide a weeks training for a small group of programmers at their Boston office. The lead programmer of this group was Fred Cass ("VRMan") who later won a 3DFx screen saver competition. The company grew and we moved into flight simulators, “F-1 6 Aggressor", being published by Virgin, and "Wings Of Destiny", being published by Psygnosis. After that I was responsible for recruitment and training of employees, supervising all programming within the company and improving and expanding the 3d library, including Direct3D and DirectDraw extensions. It has also been necessary for me to become specialized in debugging and profiling, performing both on the release versions of the games via disassembling objects, hexadecimal editors, VTune and SoftIce. Over the years I wrote various small projects: a general landscape viewer for GEC-Marconi; point-of-purchase demo for VitualIO headsets; landscape viewer used by Brooketree for CES trade show and numerous utilities, e.g. palette handling, image compression, image format changing, etc.
