About David Paperno, Ed.D.

As an educator the truly great learning experiences I have been a part of are the result of two pieces aligning: Extraordinary preparation and Exceptional teaching. Each part on its own can go a long way, but when they come together educational goals are exceeded and the students go beyond their potential.Extraordinary preparation takes on a variety of different parts. The curriculum must be scoped, sequenced, and broken into manageable segments. The student population must be understood, it’s a lot different teaching a topic for the first time versus refreshing a group for the fifth time. The communications tools available must be known, the conditions of the education need to be estimated, and the vision must be defined. Historical results, current best practices, and cutting edge theories should be reviewed to see if there are further ways to set-up the teaching portion for success. I have found the time that is put into this only positively impacts the next part. Exceptional teaching requires translating all of the preparation into a classroom strategy that works. Being able to deliver material so the students learn, remaining flexible to adjust delivery to the needs of the students, and refining the material to an appropriate speed are essential. Additionally, being able to deal with individual students who need extra help or to be challenged is inherent in classroom management. These parts can be coached, mentored, and modeled, but it is only through teaching actual students that I have been able to build major skills. These two parts of the equation are at the heart of every educational venture I have taken. Whether helping develop curriculum in Vietnam, coaching teachers in various science departments, teacher science in Title 1 schools, or teaching science in Thailand. Through constantly learning, experimenting and practicing I have been able to achieve success with my students.
