In 2008, as part of a departmental restructure, a new CIO promoted me to a newly created architect position. I continued the Pickles digital transformation focussing more on strategic advice, planning, coordination and peer review as well as solution design, research and issue resolution. I was required to advise IT and business management to CEO level, lead and support internal staff and external consultants.In 2014 another new CIO restructured the department. The subsequent role definition exercises started me thinking about whether I was still learning new skills or stretching myself at Pickles after 15 years. At this point I decided that moving to web development was more important to me than continued team leadership roles. Assisted by a recommendation from a former Sybase contractor I scored a short term contract with Pickles Auctions to design and build their public web site and PAIRS vendor portal. They renewed the contract continually for the next 15 years as I lead the transformation of Pickles from silos of branch data to an internally and externally integrated digital business.Accomplishments- Designed and developed first Pickles Java web site with integration to internal auction system data- Designed and developed Java/Powerbuilder vendor portal web site saving the printing and faxing of more than 5,000 reports per month- Designed an architecture for the Powerbuilder enterprise software system to run in a distributed mode at Pickles branches and a local mode for remote auctions- Designed and developed services allowing Pickles vendors secure direct access to their data over various web protocols- Designed replacement web site front end on Infoglue CMS using Ant as the build tool, increasing functionality and allowing traffic increase to 700,000 visits, 11,000,000 page requests per monthTechnologies: Sybase Jaguar, SQLAnywhere, Powerbuilder, Java, Tomcat, SOAP, XSLT.

Back to contracting I led six Sybase staff in analysis, design and development of the Quoting and Disposing modules of the SWIFT fleet management systems for Orix. I was also responsible for task estimation, tracking and reporting; team coordination and mentoring; and review of deliverables. The project had been running for several years when I came in and was terminated by Orix three months later.I spent the last two weeks of the contract at Sybase head office working out how best to build web applications using their products.Technologies: Powerbuilder, Sybase System 11

With many departments outsourcing IT positions became tight in Canberra so I spread my net wider. I was employed by HIH Insurance to lead a team designing, developing and supporting the Connect+ insurance underwriting and sales system. Here I was also responsible for project scheduling, tracking and reporting; development of standards for configuration, release and quality management.Unfortunately the financial problems at HIH were increasingly visible and I left before it fell apart and was acquired.At HIH I designed and tested an architecture for running Connect+ as a web application, allowing existing code to be used to sell insurance online. Assisted by a recommendation from another former DASFLEET contractor I was signed up by the ACS to do requirement collection, analysis, design and development for their excise reporting system. While the original team leader was on maternity leave I took on her role: managing four staff; managing the project schedule, tracking and reporting; doing configuration and release management; and ensuring team compliance with quality assurance standards and procedures.In 1998 the government outsourced IT at the ACS to EDS, who didn't want contractors in team leader positions. Wanting to continue with higher responsibilities I did not renew my contract.

This was a great time to be a PowerBuilder developer so I moved into contracting. DASFLEET purchased a source licence for the Pinnacle asset management system from SSA and I redeveloped it for the specific DASFLEET requirements and did maintenance on other DASFLEET applications. When DASFLEET was privatised and my contract completed I chose not to renew in order to move to what seemed like a more stable position.

I picked up this job on my Microsoft Access skills, then trained in PowerBuilder to be part of a team writing versions 2 and 3 of the Pinnacle asset management system. Again, I left to widen my resume when it was clear that no path to promotion was available in the company.I had my first taste of web development here, organising and setting up a company web site.

I came to Defence via their university IT graduate intake and ended up at the Combat Data Systems Centre. I found my feet as a programmer and integrator here, was promoted internally once, and moved on when it became clear that the structure of the centre and high senior staff retention did not allow taking on further responsibilities.On the military side I wrote software to interface ruggedised versions of MS-DOS hardware to specialised military hardware in order to integrate naval combat systems.On the administrative side I supervised the migration of the major database and database applications to an Informix database server and Windows client applications. I then administered and maintained the Informix server, developing in-house applications as required in Microsoft Access and the Informix form designer.
