As a practicing attorney for six years, I developed the strong organization and time management skills needed to keep each case in my portfolio moving towards resolution. This also necessitated strong written and verbal communication skills in order to work with my clients, opposing parties, and the courts.In 2011, I started my own law practice in order to move home to the Kansas City area. This required rapid advancement of my ability to organize my caseload, in addition to marketing, accounting, and all management aspects of operating a small business.My solo practice was primarily focused on representing the plaintiff in employment law cases. Because these cases were typically on a contingency basis, my income was unpredictable. In 2014, my wife and I decided to start a family, so an irregular paycheck was terrifying. I had several friends, including my wife, that advocated the software industry as an exciting field. I was skeptical that this would be a good fit for me because I was not literate in technology; however, I decided to take my chances, wind my law practice down, and apply for an entry-level position.I was able to quickly develop a strong technical ability. This allowed me to move into a position implementing complex technical processes to configure and correct client software suites. A short time later, I was able to move into a senior position on that team, charged with increasing our overall effectiveness.The role of creating documentation and implementing procedures to increase efficiency made me realize that my strongest skill is taking something that is unorganized and making it organized. I experience a thrill taking various inputs from clients, co-workers, and computers, then turning them into a streamlined process to implement an established objective. This naturally led me to the project management team.As a project manager, I have enjoyed the challenge of managing a heavy project load. These include projects for clients and internal projects for the company. I have a focus in technical projects, but am able to maintain a portfolio that includes each type of project my company offers. This requires rapidly switching from one established process to another in order to ensure each project continues towards its conclusion. The satisfaction I experience as I turn these disparate components into a smoothly running process leads me to conclude that I have truly found my calling as a project manager.
