Senior Voice/Systems Engineer
With gotalk undergoing organisational restructuring, I was made redundant in June 2012 and moved to NetSIP. NetSIP was part of the Over the Wire group which in turn was acquired by Aussie Boradband in March 2022.My role at Aussie Broadband involves:System administration and development of FreeSWITCH-based voice softswitches.Dialplan design, testing and implementation.Development of back-end business support systems using a range of open source technologies such as MySQL, PHP and various portal frameworks.Service provisioning support.Third-level engineering support to the customer support team for voice-related issues.
It&T Systems Engineer
Due to my wife's ill health we decided to relocate to Queensland. UPC had sold its flagship SuperSaver product to CardCall (part of the gotalk group) and I was invited to join the company working on the Gold Coast. At the time gotalk was a full service ISP and VSP but has since divested the post paid aspects of its business to focus on prepaid. My primary role was to be the VoIP expert and be responsible for the VoIP SoftSwitch which serviced up to 20,000 residential and business customers. My background had mainly been with ISDN and some SS7 so VoIP (and SIP in particular) was a steep learning curve. I invested a great deal of time reading and learning about the applicable RFCs and explored ethernet packet traces to the point where I now have a very strong grasp of the workings of the SIP protocol. In parallel I gained a great deal of experience in troubleshooting customer premises equipment (CPE) such as Analog Telephony Adapters (ATAs) and combination router/ATAs and how they behaved with respect to the gotalk SoftSwitch. My other responsibilities involve:Liasing with wholesale customers to establish new SIP trunks for termination of their voice traffic.Provisioning of ISDN, SS7 and VoIP services on the various switching equipment within the gotalk network including Excel switches and Dialogic IMG VoIP gateways.Support in management of phonecard products and rates.System administration of open-source mail servers and gateways, including deploying and revising advanced virus and spam filtering mechanisms.Managing upgrades of Softswitch and IMG switches.Management of geographic number allocations from ACMA, including ordering new number ranges, liasing with other carriers to have their networks conditioned for our new number allocations, allocating number ranges to wholesale customers and conditioning our network to route the numbers to the customers.
It Manager
Pracom divested its prepaid phonecard services division and Unidial Prepaid Communications (UPC) was established by a former line manager to continue on with that business. I transferred across to UPC as part of the divestiture. As IT Manager I was responsible for all aspects of IT operations and in-house development and support. I had a staff of 2 working on development of internal applications / intranet and general technical support respectively. Some of my main acheivements include:Establishment of server room in our new premises.Relocation of phonecard infrastructure to a hosted data centre.Development of an entire post-paid call rating and billing solution for fixed-line business customers using open-source databases and scripting languages. It included call rating, invoicing with cost centres, creation of physical invoices and integration with Microsoft Great Plains accounting software and the UPC intranet.Guided the development of the UPC intranet and developed some portions myself, including a footy tipping module!System administration, maintenance, provisioning and support of all phonecard telephony switches and databases.Worked closely with the CEO and marketing manager on developing new products and provided advice on the more technical aspects.Responsible for in-house business servers however day-to-day administration was delegated to my staff.
Software Quality Assurance Manager
Pracom purchased Unidal and I continued my employment with Pracom. Pracom invested heavily in R&D across a range of innovative telecommunications products, particularly in the area of voice recognition technology. As the development team started to grow I was briefly the development team leader for the MRTM product, which is still in use today (2012). MRTM is a real-time mobile telephony application providing comprehensive real-time control and reporting over a fleet of mobile phones. With multiple products under development, the team grew quite large. With my software engineering background I recognised that such a large team would need a strong development methodology. I therefore recommended a formalised approach to development and took on the role of Software Quality Assurance manager. In this role I worked with the development team leaders to develop procedures and processes based on QA standards to effectively manage the software development lifecycle from inception, through design, development, testing and deployment.
Systems Administrator
I transferred from Cooee to Unidial with the relocation of the phonecard platform. My role initially continued as previously.Unidial further developed and began selling the phonecard platform to third parties, particularly into overseas markets. Whilst continuing my system administration role, I became more development and pre-sales focussed. I was involved in developing and testing new modules for the phonecard and prepaid mobile applications.I travelled to Fiji, Vanuatu and China to install prepaid phonecard and prepaid mobile solutions into carrier environments operating in those countries. This included the complete project management of the delivery of the solution, from system build, test and ship to on-site installation, integration, acceptance testing and staff training. In Australia I was heavily invovled in deploying and managing the prepaid mobile solution into Vodafone, again a first in the industry. The platform was improved to provide greater resiliency through clustered database servers and multiple call processing servers.
Systems Administrator
System administration of SCO Unix systems used to deliver phonecard, IVR and 1900 services.Database administration of phonecard database.Commissioning of additional telecommunications infrastructure to expand capacity of the phonecard system.Manage the relocation of the infrastructure and telecommunication services to Unidial.Development and maintenance of phonecard application and other IVR services.Coordinate updates to phonecard call-flows, announcements and rate tables.24x7 on-call support.
Pre Sales Support
Prophecy specialised in Computer Aided Software Development (CASE) tools and Configuration Management (CM) tools. My duties included:In house development and systems administration.Project-based development and consulting.Pre-sales software demonstrations.Post-sales software training course development and delivery.Post-sales technical support.Customer focused software customisation and automation.
