Shebeen is an ambitious project founded by a diverse bunch of creatives with a deep love for music, art, lighting and create good experiences which cater to a range of people from cultures all over the world.A term with its genesis in Ireland, 'shebeen' (Irish: síbín) was originally an illicit bar or club where exercisable alcoholic beverages were sold without a licence. Most of these establishments were run by women known as shebeen queens who were responsible for brewing the liquor which was sold at these establishments, a testament to the powerful role women play in society. The term shebeen spread through South America, Europe and Africa and in certain African countries, was seen as a place the oppressed could come together, drink, listen to music and express themselves culturally. The importance of shebeens in unifying communities and providing a safe place for discussion was integral in times of oppression.As a concept, we felt the term Shebeen encompassed everything we as founders were looking for in events, which includes openness, togetherness, a place to meet new people which is culturally diverse, without borders catering for a diverse pallet of sensory pleasures. We essentially want to provide a platform for people to express their true selves, in whichever shape or form this may take. This brought us together from Malta, South Africa and India to form our Shebeen. 🦒
