About Daniel Burke
My first experience dealing with customers and users was conducting training on a product I had been involved in developing. The experience working with users was incredibly refreshing and interesting; I sought variety from development. But I left with a lot of questions: Why was the product in this buggy state? How come this workflow was hard to teach? Who expected the customer to support the product with a database administrator, yet had not considered it an unrealistic expectation that increased the friction of the user experience?I started to think differently about the work I was conducting, with a heightened awareness of the customer problems and desired outcomes. It was unreasonable for the product to stop working with missing data, the user doesn't know how to fix it! We don't even know if this complex capability works accurately yet we continually pitch it as a differentiator! Why are we implementing this feature when the use case won't be exercised by the market? I had adopted a Product mindset without realising it.The opportunity to then become a full-fledged Product Manager then presented itself. I leapt at it. I have had failings: diving too deep technically and micromanaging developers, thinking I could unilaterally make decisions and annoying stakeholders. I have had successes: reorganising prototypes into a new communicable brand, testing new technology and executing go-to-market. I have developed an appreciation of and relish the challenge of managing products.My current goals are about developing my craft to practise in a new environment. I'm enhancing my skill set by undertaking a Graduate Certificate in Product Management at RMIT and learning intensely about bringing that product vision to life. As the sole Product Manager at Mediaware, I was entrusted with practising Product Management to help our customers realise the full potential of video. I worked between engineering and business development to represent the customer and push the product strategy vision.My responsibilities included:- Fulfilling the role of Product Owner for development teams.- Prioritisation of product development from strategic to tactical levels.- Supporting customer support activities, whether helping those working with customers, or directly assisting customers.- Supporting sales activities from product demonstration, proposals, trade show participation, customer consultation, onboarding, and training.- Domestic, international, internal and external stakeholder engagement on product planning and progress.- Market and customer analysis for business opportunities and go-to-market planning.My highlights were:- Collating our long-term future ideas and prototypes into the single product brand 'MINT' which cemented the value proposition internally and with customers.- Kicking off some experiments in web and cloud technology that started a rolling boulder resulting in the launch of our 'EVAS' MVP.

Highlights included:- Provided onsite consulting to major customer about maximising their deployment of our products to solve their problems.- Leadership role in company organisational transformation acting as Product Owner and Scrum Master, and evangelising agile principals and values.- Spearheaded transition from Subversion to Git, with all active product development occurring on Git within 3 months.

Software Engineer
As a Software Engineer I worked on complex multi-threaded products that were written primarily in C++. In this position, I matured my programming skills from a self-taught level to one with an eye for detail in good coding practice thanks to a strong surrounding team that provided great feedback. Highlights include:- Led training and support for the deployment of products to a major domestic customer, including running the course multiple times.- Developed UI to simplify creation of computer vision processing jobs.- Implemented support for Video Moving Target Indicator data and contributed to developing use cases and concepts of how to maximise the outcomes with this data.
