The Division of Scientific Programs is responsible for the development, management, and evaluation of the AACR’s meetings, conferences, think tanks, workshops, and other scientific programs for external stakeholders. These programs may be developed and managed independently or in conjunction with one of more associations, societies, or academic institutions and may be of various sizes, timeframes, and formats - taking place domestically and internationally.As the Director of Scientific Programs, I report directly to Chief Executive Officer and lead the division’s efforts to effectively and efficiently utilize resources to produce scientifically relevant and diverse programs that serve researchers across all areas of cancer research. I oversee a staff of Assistant and Associate Directors, Scientific Program Administrators, Administrative Managers, Coordinators, Associates, and Assistants. I work closely with all internal departments, councils, working groups, leadership, and committees; as well as with outside stakeholders to assess needs and goals for AACR’s portfolio of programs; develop strategies and guidelines for executing these programs; create tools to critique programs; and analyze results to provide guidance for future programs.
Associate Director, Program Development, Science & Education Division
The Program Development Department is responsible for the project management, development, analysis, and strategic planning of a portfolio of 30-40 scientific meetings and workshops each year. These programs vary in size and scope, from a 50 person think tank to the AACR Annual Meeting – a program that draws nearly 20,000 researchers, clinicians, patient advocates, government and industry representatives from 100 different countries.- Secured over $1,500,000 in funding through the National Cancer Institute- Directly manage 8-12 programs per year; oversee full portfolio of 30-40 programs per year- Collaborate with domestic and international organizations (National Cancer Institute, European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer, UT Health Science Center at San Antonio, American Society of Clinical Oncology, Latin America Cooperative Oncology Group, etc.) to develop scientific programs- Serve as liaison to Special Conferences Committee (oversees specialty meetings, 6-12 per year)- Manage staff of 2-3 Program Administrators and 2-3 support staff- Revised department structure into project teams to successfully produce largest volume of programs- Lead project management of 2 of the top 3 programs in terms of attendance (3,500-8,500) and revenue ($60,000-$250,000)- Serve on three internal working groups developing the Strategic Plan 2020 initiative
