Dean G. Johns is currently an artist living and working in Matthews, North Carolina. Now retired from teaching, he is a full time Metal Smith and Sculptor. He received his BS in Art Education from Florida State University, M.Ed. in Visual Arts Education from the University of Central Florida, and MFA in Jewelry and Sculpture from Winthrop University. He has 40+ years of experience in public school arts education with 32 of those years as a middle and high school art teacher. After the classroom years, he was the Visual Arts Specialist and then Director of Arts Education for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools until his retirement. He has been active in the North Carolina Art Education Association serving as the secondary director and president. He has also been active in the National Art Education Association serving as the National Secondary Director, 1987-89 and the Southeastern Vice President, 1992 - 94. He served as the President of RAEA/NAEA (the Retired Art Educator's Issues Group of NAEA.) He completed two terms on the Board of Trustees of the National Art Education Foundation in 2018, during which he served as member, Chairman of the Board, and as Past Chair.He has conducted workshops for artists and teacher throughout the United States on a wide variety of topics including: Literacy and Arts Education; design development; understanding the creative process; tapestry and loom weaving; jewelry making; and most recently the creation of sculptural forms using repurposed and found materials. His passion and focus is the creation of one of a kind art jewelry in sterling silver and copper and in two and three dimensional repurposed and found object sculptural assemblages.
