Team lead on the Data Operations team in Candid's Data Division. Responsible for data imports and internal ETL, process design and implementation, and data storage strategies. We support the Data Services group (external data sales), external API sourcing, internal cleansing and mastering systems (Candid Data System, CDS), and Customer Support team. We are domain experts on the the various government publications used for compliance products.

Candid is the new organization resulting from the combination of GuideStar USA and Foundation Center. My job stayed pretty much the same through 2019, and then in 2020 I transitioned to the Candid Data System (CDS) development team, which is building the central data processing and distribution pipeline for the new organization, combining the disparate data sources into a unified whole while maintaining backwards compatibility for legacy applications. This is primarily using a SQL Server backend and an AWS tech stack for the pipeline. I am still involved in API support activities as well.

In 2015 most of my time was spent on a data abstraction layer, coalescing data from disparate sources into a single document per organization and providing the interface through which this document is served to the site. This decoupling has enabled us to rework the underlying mechanisms without any impact on downstream processes. Continuing responsibilities include infrastructure and database design, internal ETL, API development and framework design. My programming tasks have expanded to building the data abstraction layer for GuideStar's internal use. As a DBA I am consulted by other developers for data flow planning and persistence in addition to my data architecture and middleware programming (C#). In addition to the data stores, I create and maintain data marts for high speed, application specific, reads.Sales support as necessary.

Increased responsibilities to include infrastructure and database design. As a DBA I am consulted by the dev group for data flow planning and persistence in addition to my client data deliverables. I was one of the two DBAs responsible for the migration of the legacy SQL 2000 systems into SQL 2005, and subsequently into SQL 2008. In addition to the data stores, I create and maintain data marts for high speed, application specific reads.As an extension of my traditional DBA duties I am getting back to my programming roots. I am a developer member of the team implementing the middleware framework, which abstracts data access from data storage, and the public facing API/Webservice infrastructure. ODATA is employed for read/write interfaces, and for super fast read only capability we are employing Couchbase as our document store.

At ICL I worked as a .Net 1.1 and SQL developer on an internal WinForms application for a shipping company. My specific focus was on the Marine Operations and Equipment Management. We were building a replacement for an outdated system written in Clipper, so response times and process flow were critical considerations. I was also frequently tapped to manually shuffle shipping containers from one state to another in the database as issues were encountered and backend changes were necessary for the ships to launch on time (we called Port of Richmond, Port of Chester, Port of Liverpool, and Port of Antwerp). These were high-stress situations with small margins of error, and were my introduction to direct database manipulation.

Before and while I was in college I interned with 3GI as a software tester. 3GI then split, with the Services division being acquired by Maximus, and the remainder was later purchased by RSA Security. I worked for 3GI, then remained after the purchase by RSA, and after the Williamsburg location was closed I went and worked for Maximus. My job was to fully test smartcard security software. I include this because testing builds a mindset. You think not only in terms of what needs to get done but what can happen along the way to cause problems. If you test software and processes, you learn to think of things that break software and processes, and, therefore, build better ones.
