Science Engagement And Workflows Department HeadNational Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (Nersc) Mar 2024 - PresentBerkeley, California, United StatesI lead the Science Engagement and Workflows Department at NERSC. We aim to support seamless, efficient, and scalable HPC workflows that empower researchers to tackle the most complex scientific and engineering challenges. -
Group Lead For Data Science EngagementNational Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (Nersc) Dec 2018 - Mar 2024Berkeley, CaThe Data Science Engagement Group spearheads NERSC’s relationships with experimental facilities and experimental scientists. I am responsible for leading a team of staff members to engage with scientists from experimental facilities including light sources, particle accelerators, telescopes and genome sequencers. I enable complex workflows from those facilities to run seamlessly on the HPC architectures, storage systems and other infrastructure at NERSC. -
Big Data ArchitectNational Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (Nersc) Jun 2015 - Dec 2019Nersc, Oakland Scientific FacilityI work in the Data and Analytics Services group at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing center (NERSC). My projects here include workflows, machine learning and other data-intensive analytics, with a focus on applications to cosmology, HEP and materials science. In 2016 Cori arrived at NERSC - the world's 5th fastest supercomputer. Much of my work is focussed on implementing data-intensive scientific computing problems on Cori's many-core architecture and memory hierarchy, including administering the Burst Buffer Early User program. -
Acting Data Department HeadNational Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (Nersc) Aug 2019 - Oct 2019The Data Department at NERSC leads support for data-intensive science at NERSC, and includes groups focussed on data analytics, data science storage systems and infrastructure. As acting department head, I was responsible for setting strategic directions and prioritizing work across the department, providing feedback and guidance to the division Director, and enhancing scientific productivity for the thousands of scientists who use NERSC for data-intensive computing. -

Project ScientistSlac National Accelerator Laboratory Apr 2013 - May 2015I'm a SLAC project scientist working on the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope. My research interests are based around solving the problems we face in making measurements of the structure of the Universe using the phenomenon of gravitational lensing. These include the tricky issue of how to measure the shape of a galaxy from a handful of noisy pixel data, and how to use the tiny distortions in galaxy shape introduced by gravitational lensing to constrain models of cosmology. I'm particularly interested in using new statistical techniques to characterise these distortions - since we only have one Universe it's vital to extract the maximal information possible from our datasets! This kind of work naturally involves the use of large amounts of cosmological simulations, and of simulations of our telescope. I'm therefore involved in the LSST Image Simulation effort, where we develop physics-based simulations of the data that will be provided by the LSST. I work with large amounts of data every day, and to speed my work I've developed a number of cosmological applications in GPU computing. My computing research interests are reflected in my postion as Computing Infrastructure co-conveor of the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration. -
Lsst Post-DocSlac National Accelerator Laboratory Jun 2009 - Apr 2013Slac National Accelerator LaboratoryPost-doctoral research associate working on the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope. My research interests were based around cosmology with weak gravitational lensing, and in particular developing the statistics of shear peaks. I worked on the LSST Image Simulator (IMSIM) to enhance value for use in science analysis. I also developed an interest in implementing tools to aid large-scale cosmological data analysis using GPUs. -
LecturerStanford University Jun 2014 - Aug 2014Teaching Physics 15: Discovering the Cosmos. I designed and taught this 8-week intensive course to a class of 45 during the summer session at Stanford University in 2013 and 2014. We covered the foundations of astronomy and cosmology, from the basic theories of gravity and light and how we make astronomical observations, all the way out to Dark Energy and the eventual fate of our Universe. Along the way we looked at everything from our Solar System to galaxy formation and what happens inside a black hole. -

Babar Post-DocImperial College London 2006 - 2009London, United Kingdom And Slac National Accelerator LaboratoryPost-doctoral research associate working on the BaBar particle physics experiment at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. I was primarily responsible for data analysis, searching through the large BaBar dataset for evidence of the rare radiative penguin decay b->dgamma. I was also trigger commissioner, responsible for the smooth day-to-day running of the BaBar trigger system during Run 5.
