Advertising Manager
Elizabethtown, Kentucky
My favorite job (aside from the one I have now.) When I was interviewed for the team leader position in the advertising department, I knew I was ready to take on that role. However, only a few months later, our ad director took a leave of absence and the company decided to fill her position and they asked me to interview for the job. For about a day, I said I wasn't ready. Then I realized, of course I was ready. I had spent over 3 years working for my hometown newspaper and almost 10 years working for The News Enterprise in the advertising sales department. I think the biggest asset I brought to that position was the years of real "out on the streets" selling. Not just selling anywhere, but right there along side of the people that would now report to me. As the Ad Director I managed a 10 person selling staff of outside and inside sales reps and a 10 person graphics design team. We were responsible for not only the 6-day, 19,000 circulation daily newspaper, but also a weekly TMC shopper and a weekly military newspaper, Inside the Turret. During my 5 years as ad director our team developed a quarterly health magazine, an online automotive website, pulled off the biggest Millennium promotion ever and published special sections each month. My job consisted of meeting 6 million dollar annual ad budget and figuring out how to grow that number each year. I worked with my team to develop efficient process improvements, rate structures that gained growth in commitment from our advertisers, commission plans and job descriptions that motivated and retained aggressive sales people and creating an environment that encouraged team based management. I represented the newspaper in our community as a board member of Elizabethtown School scholarship committee, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Habitat for Humanity volunteer. I was involved in many community and civic functions in Hardin County, inclu: the Hardin County Chamber of Commerce and Leadership Elizabethtown.
