I have taught for the past fifteen years in all kinds of settings and with all kinds of students. This diverse teaching background with developing writers and readers gives me a deep appreciation and understanding of the process each student participates in to become more skilled. The students who have struggled the most with reading and writing have especially helped deepen my understanding of what developing writers and readers need most – the opportunity to talk through their ideas with a thoughtful and more experienced writer and reader. For this reason, I make one-on-one conferencing and in-depth conversations about writing an important part of writing projects. All my students have commented that conferencing with me and conversing with their colleagues in class have helped them the most in reconsidering and revising their work to be more effective. Indeed, conversation facilitates the processes of reading, thinking, and writing and helps reinforce each person's development along the continuum from being less to more skilled in effective thinking and communication. I learn alongside my students to model this process, growing and adapting in my skills as a thinker, writer, and facilitator for all my students.
