Magnolia Cottage, Ainslie, ACTOwner and manager of a short term holiday lettings in a pet friendly, heritage-listed 2-bedroom weatherboard cottage in a heritage precinct in delightful Inner North Canberra. This largely original cottage was built in 1927 and is being sympathetically renovated by the owner with assistance from her daughters. Magnolia Cottage is advertised on Stayz and Allhomes rental. Ongoing garden maintenance and development will see abundance of fresh organically-grown fruit and vegetables for guests consumption. The phased repairs and maintenance to the house in the few between guest periods add to their comfort and sustainability. My next main project is to paint the house - not a simple exercise given the age, it is painted with high-lead content paint so its careful removal anddisposal is my priority (late 2012 - early 2013).Guests have the opportunity to suggest external colour schemes...

Regulatory work under the Airports (Protection of Airspace) Regulations 1996 including specific aspects of safeguarding and protection of airspace related to temporary (cranes and the occasional container ship) and permanent (buildings) intrusions into protected airspace. I assisted in the set up of National Airports Safeguarding Advisory Group (NASAG). Its high level members from Commonwealth, State and Territory Government planning and transport authorities, the Department of Defence, CASA, Air services Australia and the Australian Local Government Association, were brought together to inform and develop an wider perception and understanding of the issues of planning around airports with aim to achieve an overarching plan around the major federal-leased Australian airports. NASAG has since developed the National Airports Safeguarding Framework (2012).

transport and infrastructure policy: organising stuff, everything from keeping paper in the printers and reconcilling cabcharge vouchers to booking flights, arranging meetings, sourcing & distributing meeting papers, taking meeting records, accurately managing a topic-specific website and monitoring its usage, generating newsletters...

Laboratory work: setting up for agriculture students' experiments and testing on soil and plant analysis, supervising students, making up the various solutions. Glasshouse work: responsible for maintenance, growing plant biology and demonstration plants - showing effects of genetics, soil, fertiliser, and other environmental factors. Data collection: accurate weather recording, compiling data, developing and maintaining records. Library duties: ordering, accessioning new books, keeping the library in order, general librarian work.

Farmed the old fashioned way, the shire horse farm uses horse power to demonstrate using the old implements and machinery, grew oats and grass, had pigs, apples for cider, an on-site blacksmith/farrier. This was a great and physically demanding job, where I was given the privilege of ploughing, seeding, fertilizing, and harvesting using shire horses and the original horse-drawn implements. I was involved with regular horse-related work grooming, feeding, mucking out, lots of cleaning and polishing brasses and harness, to the ultimate - showing the horses. As it was demonstration farm, I also lead group and individual tours, and worked in the cafe and ticket office. Highlights: the excitement and joy of the visitors; oat harvest - binding & stooking the oat sheaths and setting them out neatly for artist David Sheppherd's painting; the excitement and exhaustion of threshing by steam engine; preparing the shires and their harnesses for show; driving the wagons of 2 and 4-in-hand bringing in the harvest or taking tourists around the farm; ploughing -2 horses and a single farrow reversible plough - many miles walked; and the very best fresh baked Devonshire scones and clotted cream with jam!
