About Declan Meehan

I work as Deputy Director of Cara-Friend, which is an LGBTQ+ community organisation in Northern Ireland. I manage our team in our Belfast and Derry offices, as well as overseeing strategic development and partnerships to help the organisation grow and enhance its impact. My motivation is focused on improving the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ young people across the island of Ireland, which is reflected in my co-founding of ShoutOut in 2012, of which I am currently Chairperson. I am also a member of the management committee of Love Equality, the campaign for marriage equality in Northern Ireland. I also serve as Vice-Chair of the Northern Ireland Anti-Bullying Forum. I have a wealth of experience working with charities and NGOs, within community development, as well as part of various campaigns in NI and Ireland. I also have experience in events management. I believe in the potential and power of communities and I am committed to working in a community context which helps to improve the circumstances of the individuals within that community. Currently based in Donegal and working between Derry and Belfast.

Cara-Friend works with LGBTQ+ youth across NI, including the provision of safe-space youth groups, one-to-one support, training and education, and our LGBTQ+ Inclusive Schools Programme. My responsibilities, as well as line-management, include partnerships and strategic development of the organisation, which has seen Cara-Friend grow from an organisation of three staff members with one LGBTQ+ youth group to eight staff members and seven youth groups in the space of three years. I am also responsible for securing funding - from government, corporate partners and charitable trusts. I have overseen the design and implementation of our LGBTQ+ Inclusive Schools Programme - the first of its kind in Northern Ireland - which has seen rapid growth since its introduction in 2016. As part of our community development programme in Cara-Friend I have run several various events with the aim of engaging and educating members of the wider community, including a history festival in February 2018, an Interfaith Dialogue in August 2017 and a number of youth forums throughout 2018. Sep 2015 - Present

Chairperson

County Dublin, Ireland

I have been involved with ShoutOut since its foundation in 2012. Since then we have grown this largely voluntary organisation into one of the biggest LGBTQ+ organisations in Ireland, and the only all-Ireland organisation in the LGBTQ+ sector. I became Chairperson of the Board of Directors in December 2017.

Schools Coordinator

Ireland

Before I became Chairperson of the Board of Directors at ShoutOut, I worked in a number of roles since 2012. I have served on the Board for the duration of that time. Part of my work was around developing and growing the organisation as well as increasing visibility and awareness of ShoutOut through partnerships and working directly with schools and other education stakeholders.

I control brand management for The Undergraduate Awards and am responsible for the overall look and feel of that brand. I manage the website: both content- and design-wise, as well as writing the monthly newsletters and communications that are sent to 15,000+ people. The Undergraduate Awards is an international academic awards programme that is open, for the most part, throughout the year, for submissions. The Undergraduate Awards Global Summit is an event which takes place each November, and I had an active role to play in putting this event together in terms of venue identification and booking, as well as speaker research and booking. My experience in event management has become more extensive in this regard. As part of my job I am also responsible for the maintenance and management of our alumni network, which is made up of former winners of The Undergraduate Awards. This involves including our alumni in our major events, as well as organising specific alumni events, such as dinners, in order to create networking opportunities for them with one another. As The Undergraduate Awards is a small organisation there is a lot of opportunity to work on a variety of different areas, making my employment here a well-rounded one, experience-wise. Show less
