That career assessment survey I took in Junior High School, it told me that I would be good in public service, and it couldn’t have been more right. I have dedicated my life to doing just that, primarily in the Fire and EMS service. I started out as a Medical Explorer and Junior Firefighter in 1989/1990, and became a volunteer and haven’t looked back. I have loved helping people especially in their times of need. I obtained my EMT license in 1993, and quickly determined that I needed to do more, so I went out and got my paramedic license in 1996. I am now working on getting my Critical Care or Flight Paramedic so I can do more.Over my 30+ years in Fire/EMS service, I have volunteered, worked part-time and full-time for various fire departments and EMS agencies. I have held the positions of Jr. Firefighter, Firefighter/EMT, Firefighter/Paramedic, Paramedic, Captain, Assistant Chief, and Fire Chief. In each of those roles, I loved responding to calls and providing the best possible service and care to those that needed it. Even as Fire Chief, I would attend on EMS calls.I like to take on projects looking for ways to improve processes and provided services. I tried to create consistency in new hire training by creating an orientation and mentorship program that would make sure that everyone received the same information. I worked with several electronic record management systems to be able to better track training, calls for service, and pre-planning.Despite my nickname of “8 Track” that I received in paramedic school, I tend to be a “jack of all trades, master of none” type. I like working with electronic record keeping software to see what can be used, and how to get the most out of it, a lot of it by trial and error. I am interested in radios (public safety and amateur), computers, electrical, woodworking, construction/remodeling, I have done web design in the past, and most recently I purchased a 3D printer. For the most part, most of my 3D prints have been designed and built to help me in my EMS job.Working in the Fire/EMS industry you usually have a lot of part time jobs, which allows me to incorporate a lot of experience and ideas into what I do. I have worked for an amusement park as a paramedic, I have worked as an armed private security officer, retail sales, repossession agent, electronic record management software,, and public safety dispatcher.When it comes down to it, I love helping people, I try to do the right thing even when no one is watching, and lead by example and be honest, and make things better however I can.
