Deirdre McCarthy qualified as a solicitor in 1999 having studied at Trinity College, Dublin (LLB) and the Law Society of Ireland.Joined the State Claims Agency in 2023 as Solicitor/Claims Manager on the Clinical Claims Team. Joined Medisec in 2015 as Senior Legal Counsel. She provided guidance and support to GPs throughout complaints and disciplinary proceedings. She advised general practitioners on medical, ethical and legal queries that arose in general practice on a day-to-day basis. She worked collaboratively with GPs, trainee GPs and practice staff, by providing training in various workshops and industry conferences, on best practice and mitigation of risk in general practice. She conducted audits of GP practices.Deirdre was previously a Partner on the Healthcare Team at Hayes solicitors and focused on regulatory advices and professional negligence. She represented clinicians and hospitals at inquests, Medical Council and Dental Council inquiries and healthcare professionals, doctors, dentists and hospitals in the defence of medical negligence cases. She has a particular interest in the areas of informed consent and risk management issues.
