Music and movement have been a big part of Deirdre’s life, both as an accomplished Irish Step Dancer, competing (and winning!) at the national and international level, while still managing to find time for the joy of song while participating in various stage musicals and choir performances.Deirdre has combined these passions along with her love of teaching by leading hundreds of classes for toddlers and early learners to sing and dance along with their parents for a family fun activity. Most early childhood Educators agree that quality music and movement in early childhood education programs for parents and kids promotes school readiness, family engagement, parent-child relationships, and assist teachers in their own professional development. At any age, music and dance boosts language skills, physical coordination, motor skills, social, emotion, physical, and cognitive development, and stimulates the areas of the brain that impacts memory, reason and speech.

Deirdre performed several roles within school district, including one as Arts Resource Teacher for 600 students K-G5, integrating Dance Visual Arts and Musical Theatre into lessons connected with topics such as subjects as English, Science and Social Studies. In other roles, Deirdre coordinated arts programs including both discrete arts and arts integration, put on plays and was Chair of the Arts Leadership Committee.These roles were in tandem with her main focus of work, where Deirdre was tasked to implement a framework for modelling Arts Integration concepts as part of D&D (Development and Dissemination) and ITQ (Improving Teacher Quality) grants to support teachers across the district. This included concepts and approaches to engage students by demonstrating the skills, dividing complex concepts into elemental parts, describing the strategies using visual, auditory, tactile and kinesthetic techniques.The result was a sustainable and scalable solution that allowed teachers to apply this framework on their own with some personalized support in the second year of the program, and subsequently needing little oversight in teaching those lessons independently.

In addition to her responsibilities in the classroom, Deirdre co-chaired the Responsive Classroom Committee and facilitated whole school staff meetings while working cooperatively with her fellow educators to re-design curriculum. Aligning it with Vermont state standards, it differentiated performance on content knowledge and skills between adjacent grade levels, leading to focused, coherent and developmentally appropriate instruction.In the practice of her skills in Creative Arts in Learning, Deirdre applied an innovative and effective literacy program developed by Beth Olshansky at the University of New Hampshire for both her 1st grade classes. Validated by the U.S. Department of Education’s Program Effectiveness Panel and awarded federal funding for national dissemination, these programs, Picturing Writing: Fostering Literacy Through Art® and Image-Making Within The Writing Process® formed an art-and-literature-based approach to teaching writing and have demonstrated their effectiveness in significantly improving students’ writing and reading skills.
